Austinist Previews Austin City Limits: Manchester Orchestra and Patterson Hood

ManchesterOrchestra8.16.jpgStraight out of the suburbs of Atlanta, the young men of Manchester Orchestra have quickly found a spot in the Georgia indie-rock circuit. Guitarist and lead vocalist Andy Hull homeschooled himself his senior year of high school to allow himself more time to focus on his work with Manchester Orchestra. The result of that focus is the band's first full-length. Peppered with references to Woody Allen, the album is full up with moody music that pays homage to acts like Guided By Voices and Yo La Tengo.

PattersonHood8.16.07.jpgPatterson Hood is one of the minds behind the Drive-By Truckers. Those familiar with the DBT will recognize Hood's distinctive vocals, which are showcased to great effect on Hood's acoustic solo work. Hood's first solo album, Killers and Stars was recorded while the DBT were putting together Decoration Day -- a period during which the band nearly broke up and Hood went through a divorce. Evocative of the quieter tracks Hood has recorded with the band, his solo work is bittersweet, a soundtrack for muggy southern nights that would be near perfect if it weren't for the mosquitoes and the heartbreak.
