Michael Barnes at the Statesman is reporting that, "Austin stage star Joe York, most recently seen in "The Rocky Horror Show," passed away early this morning in his Brooklyn home."

York's acting was showcased in productions including Falsettos, Forever Plaid, A Streetcar Named Desire, Ruthless, and The Rocky Horror Show. He was also an accomplished director and designer.

"I had the honor to know and work with the wonderful man, Joe York. He was a gifted musician, designer, director and artist," said Kevin Farr, York's friend and fellow performer. "He looked like a movie star and was so much fun to be around. He told wonderful stories and made you laugh out loud constantly. I am so sad. He will be missed by so many. Austin has truly lost one of its favorite sons."

Joe was a wonderful actor and an even more wonderful man. His remarkable career in Austin spanned over 30 years. There will never be another Joe York. It is a truly sad day for Austin.

I can't believe it. He was supposed to be the lead in a production I had been cast in a million years ago, but he ended up not taking the part. I was always fascinated by his career in the Austin theater community....Incredibly sad that I never had the chance to know him.

Ugh, liver cancer. I can't believe he was 50 - he looked much younger to me. How sad.

What a loss. So sad. Joe York was a beam of sunshine in knee-high S&M boots.
