Austinist Show Preview: Single Frame at The Mohawk
Single Frame has been creating eclectic electro-pop for a good number of years now. The band formed in 2000 in Austin and early recordings included a first full-length, Wetheads Come Running, and the Burn Radio Airtest EP released under their original moniker Single Frame Ashtray. Now veterans of two additional records, Single Frame distinguishes itself with eccentric pop that utilizes a variety of jingles, be it the simply synth outputs or unusual sounds obtained from air horns, television sets, and what not. The band made a few line-up adjustments this year and are hard at work on a new record, due in spring next year, according to keyboardist Jason Schleter. Drummer and vocalist Adreon Henry adds that six tracks have been recorded already. Expect further bursts of quirky pop, diverse beats, and of course, more punk you can dance to. Single Frame also has much love for some of our favorites, citing Clap!Clap!, Zykos, Yellow Fever, and The Octopus Project as other local acts they are fond of. Local Music Is indeed Sexy!
Car Stereo (Wars) provide the entertainment between bands, and if their recent "Only Child Mix" (that spans everything from The Cribs to Paul Simon) is a sign of what’s to be expected, we cannot wait to dive into the dance floor. Chris Rose also informs us that CSW will be releasing a record (The Bandit) next month, so expect to hear some previews from that.
Supplemented by appetizers from La Snacks and a healthy dose of The Carrots, the Mohawk on Thursday evening should make for one satisfying meal.

Why does austinist feature so many shows at the Mohawk?
we feature shows that happen all around austin, as long as we think they're worth talking about. mohawk happens to book plenty of good stuff -- as do stubb's, emo's, la zona rosa, etc etc.
of course, if you think we've missed something, we always welcome suggestions at editor@austinist.com
it wouldn't seem the slightest bit suspicious if Mohawk had actually been a viable venue before the austinist blowjobs began...
but its just another placeholder in a space that's known for shitty sound and shittier management.
I dunno, they book good shows. I think they'll be okay.
Anyway, this sounds like a cool show. I really like The Carrots. They're like a DIY, hype-free version of The Pipettes.
I agree that the Austinist essentially helped "make" the Mohawk.
The constant promotion of the shows there -- by bands who don't get the same writeups when they play almost any other club in town -- definitely did not hurt.
It also didn't hurt that they hired Rosa who basically brought a built in set of above average local bands with her. Those bands play Beerland and Emo's -- in terms of local only shows -- a lot less than they did a couple of years ago. Not surprisingly, those same bands play Mohawk a lot and got a lot of coverage here.
I also agree that the sound, generally speaking, is below average at the Mohawk. The reason, from a viewpoint of having been in a bunch of bands, is that the Mohawk (like so many other clubs include 710, Emos inside, Flamingo Cantina, etc) insists on mic'ing guitar amps, drums, etc. For those small little rooms with people playing 2x12s (or larger), just mic the vocals, kick, and snare and let the room handle the rest. All too often, once you've got that 4x12 guitar mic'ed and the cymbals mic'ed, now you've got to raise the volume of EVERYTHING to the point where it sounds goddamned horrible. That's just my 2 cents on that.
It'd be nice if the Austinist gave some more coverage to bands that play Room 710 or other clubs a little more often. I'm tired of hearing about Car Stereo Wars and White Denim all the time. A few months ago, it was Ghostland Observatory. Not all the readers of the Austinist go to Beauty Bar or want to listen to music that is for awkward dancing.
But, I can't beat the price of reading the site.. so I keep coming back!
great feedback! and send in those recommendations.
Room 710 would love the Austinist to show up tomorrow, Friday 7.27, let's say, and enjoy the special, free happy hour show starring the continued comeback of Supersonic Uke.
As Room 710 has mentioned to Austinist staff numerous times through emails, it would be a pleasure meeting you and showing you how much Room 710 actually appreciates this blog.
Of course, our shows just may not be worth mentioning. In which case, we're gonna Aw Shucks It through another weekend.
Adi is the only Austinist music writer that I've ever seen in the flesh at Room 710. I think Pong was playing.
I am going to stay home this weekend and make thongs for all the Austinist music writers so that nobody has to ever see any of them in the flesh again.
Please don't cover Adi up.
I like what the person who knew what he/she was talking about said about the sound. My main problem is just that it's usually way too fucking loud (not thta thta is exactly what was said above). BUT the last 2 times I've seen Horse + Donkey play there (once inside, once out) the sound was IMMACULATE! So go figure.
and it sucks for 710 et al, but I'm glad there wasn't a crowd of hipster fucks at the Migas show earlier this month!
Agreed...and to be fair, Ive seen more Austinist posts about Emos shows than any other bar in town. Mohawk just happens to be on a run of good shows right now. The Austinist will post about a show at Red Lobster if its a good booking. Thats why I keep coming back. I also agree that I have seen shows at the Mohawk with sound problems one day and fantastic sound the next. They have been a venue for less than a year. The truth is, in that year, they have made a huge impression on the scene. 9 times out of 10, I have a blast there. Im just glad we have options, the more the merrier.
HA! I like the new post that we can't comment on and how The Mohawk is crossed out at the end!
But still, it looks bad when every page features a show at the club that not only houses site sponsored shows but also buys advertising from the site.
Well, I work at the Mohawk and I appreciate these posts. We are working hard to get things right in terms of sound, thanks for the input. On a limited budget, while still in construction, we are doing the best we can. I have sent these comments on to the sound guys. And for the record, the Mohawk has never purchased one piece of advertising from the Austinist. They just sponsor great events all over town, and we've been lucky enough to work with them on some. Like 710, Emos, Beerland, (bars that we love) we just want to contribute to an already great scene. The Mohawk will continue to try to book good shows at a fair price, while keeping drinks as cheap as possible. Thanks.
So that big spot on the left bar that says, "AUSTINIST SPONSORS" and has a huge Mohawk poster under it was free, huh?
Not huge, not big, just top and there and larger than the other two posters over there.
oh, I think that's a poster for a series of shows that the Austinist is sponsoring at the Mohaw, not a poster saying that the Mohawk is sponsoring the Austinist.
And room 710, I love you.
Yes [17], the "AUSTINIST SPONSORS" tag is meant to convey that WE are sponsoring THEM, not the other way around. We've sponsored events all over the place, and will continue our efforts to do so.
Room 710, let's make out. Sloppy hook tongue.
dammit, will all of you quit bitching about this site? everyone (and every site) has some personal preferences, and i'm quite fine with the ones the austinist has. if you want something else covered, make a suggestion, but don't come here as a guest and whine and accuse austinist of colluding with certain parties around town.
and seriously, this post was about single frame, the best damn band in all of austin, and no one even has anything to say about that?
It's very ambiguous, the "AUSTINIST SPONSORS".
Jist cuz ur fine w/it don't mean we r, zoo.
Yeah, just like America, if you don't like it, get the fuck out! Yeah! Don't try to suggest anything that would ever make anything better ever, because if you do, the terrorists have won and Dick Cheney will make you listen to White Denim!
Status Quo til you die, whiny liberal bitches!
MILKMAN FOR PRESIDENT!!!
VIVA LA REV-O-LU-SHE-UN!
Room 710 did some research with our soundmen, #5, and the answer as to why we mike the amps is so the drummer can hear the other instruments through the drum monitor.
Room 710 loves you, too, #17.
And True Craig, we'd kiss right back. Because if there is anything that Room 710 loves, it is to be loved. Wet, sloppy, hook tongued kisses performed to perfection included.
Yummy.
