Just moved out of the family house and feeling lonely? Living in an apartment that won't allow dogs? Maybe you need a cat.
Throughout the month of July, the Austin Humane Society and Town Lake Animal Center have lowered the adoption fee for cats to $35. This fee covers vaccination, microchipping, de-worming, flea/tick treatment, as well as spay/neuter procedure (if applicable). At this low cost, how can you pass this deal up? Even some of us with allergies have been roped into owning adopted a cat. They may be more fickle than dogs, but they still show love (in their way).
During the month of June, the Center and Humane Society had a goal of 500 cats (and kittens) adopted, and bypassed that number by 29. So they have lengthened their special deal until the end of July (that's next Tuesday).

Taking home a pet should not be a spur of the moment decision. A cat can live for up to 20 years.
Quite true Smamatha675. But for those who hesitate because of the myth that cats can not be trained, I have 3 words for you: Gunter Gobbels Williams. The same techniques he used to train lions and tigers can be used with kittens to train them to come in when called, to get off of furniture, not to scratch furniture and people, and other tricks. I have used those techniques since 1970 in training a half dozen cats.
And if you get a kitten when it is being weaned or has be abandoned by it's mother, the cat will bond with you and consider you it's subsitute mother, and be your loving companion for it's life. I have had two cats who waited at the door to greet me when I came home, and according to my wife, went to the door minutes before they could have heard my car door.
However, as someone who has adopted a couple of adult cats, it takes a long time and a lot of patience to teach cats past the age of 6 months (14 in human years)
