Literary Movie Night: Memoirs of a Geisha
When we first heard about literary movie night, we naturally assumed that the film would be Hellraiser. We mean, how many other book-turned-films have so thoroughly and entertainingly explored sadomasochism and moral confusion? Not many, we think.
Anyway, it's not our event, and the folks at Bookpeople decided to go with something a little lighter, which is their prerogative, we guess. Rob Marshall's Memoirs of a Geisha--based on Arthur Golden's 1997 book of the same name--is the fictional tale of Sakamoto Chiyo, a woman who becomes Japan's most famous geisha just as World War II begins. Though the film wasn't a critical success, it did win a few Academy Awards in 2005 (including Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design and Best Art Direction), and everyone seems to agree that it's one of the best looking films they've ever seen.
After the screening, there'll be a discussion about how the film relates to the book, which sounds like it could be a lot of fun. So if you've read the book, or if you just like hangin' out and watching movies, head on over to Bookpeople to participate in this book vs. film throwdown.
