The Laurie Show

Greetings from Froggy McGee, writing to you while recovering in sick bay. I'm happy to report that the Bay Area tour I went on with the brilliant and talented crew of the Broken Clock Cabaret, featuring the rowdy and ravenous No Salvation Army Band, was an absolute success! Unfortunately, the crazy schedule and the germs one might obtain from sharing a microphone or two caught up with me, and I was struck with a minor case of the plague. Well, make that a cold. But you'd think it was the bloody plague the way I whine and complain when I get sick.
Tonight's Laurie Show should be intriguing indeed. Daniel Pelarky of Indierect Records suggested that I do the "sultry" voice thing if I had difficulty speaking, but I may wind up laughing at myself. We shall see, pets. But first, a glimpse here and there of the fine live entertainment and goings-on that is sure to inspire the playlist tonight. What an incredibly busy weekend we have in store. Schedule accordingly.
Friday's looking pretty good from here, so I expect you'll be zigzagging about town from this gig to that.
Look out, it's an early show alert! Catch the Sad Accordions early show at the Carousel Lounge at 7 p.m. They'll be joined by Quiet, Lovely, and it's free. Your favorite price. This will probably be their last show as a six piece for a while, as Peter Kusek and the missus, Joy Gallagher, are moving overseas for about a year. “We really have a special place in our heart for the Carousel Lounge, as it's pretty much where we got our start playing together as a band," says the band. “So, if you can make it out, be sure to give them a pat on the back and maybe buy Pete a drink.” Sounds good to me!
At the Mohawk, the lovely and talented Rosie Flores of Go Nova is on bass duty tonight with AUX for the Tame…Tame & Quiet CD release party. Goodnight Fish and Our Solar System are also on the bill. Maneja Beto and Manolo Black invade Flamingo Cantina this evening for a gig, and the ladies rock it at the Beauty Bar, featuring headliners from San Antonio Girl In A Coma, and the fabulous Ume getting things started. Get the rock. Now.
As you might already know, Belaire is celebrating the release of their latest CD, Exploding Impacting with pals Red Leaves and Yellow Fever joining them for the event tonight at Emo's. DJ TJ Laserphone will spin between sets. Brazos will be trying something a little different this evening at the Blanton Museum, opting for a slightly more softened approach to take advantage of the amazing acoustics that the museum space has to offer. Great art, great music, great times. Their set begins around 9:30 p.m.
In East Austin, drop by for a pint or three at Clementine Coffee Bar on Manor Road. Mouse About is playing there tonight, along with Dum Dum & The Smarties. My dear Broken Clock Cabaret colleague Shane Kullberg is in Mouse About, so stop by, say hello, and...ask him if he's "sssmokin'". Inside joke, folks, unless you saw Inside A Broken Clock: A Tom Waits Peepshow. Then it's pretty clear.
I'd also like to extend hearty congratulations to my KUT cohorts in crime, the fabulous Melissa Joulwan and Dave Humphreys, who are getting hitched tomorrow! To celebrate, they’re having a rock 'n' roll shindig tonight at the Scoot Inn on East 4th St., featuring the lively sounds of Peter Elliot and the Sellouts and St. Joe’s Choir. Mazel tov to you both! Melissa, you can put champagne in a roller skate instead of a regular ol' fancy shoe. Much more fun that way.
Ah, Saturday, 7-7-7. The triple 7, chock full of more shows than you'll know what to do with. There's the Lil' Cap'n Travis CD release shindig at the Continental Club, with Brothers and Sisters headlining the bill. Guaranteed to be one fantastic show. And make it a point to check out the one, the only, the mighty Tee Double at the Mohawk, with Blitz, Quickwidit, and Zeal 32 also performing.
The opening reception for the Cartoon Funanza Art Exhibit tomorrow at The Stash, 2209 S. 1st St., will have fantastic work and fantastic music to compliment it. The featured artists include R. Thies, Miguel Aguilar, David DeGrand and Tyson Summers, and on the music end, Boone Graham, Adam Hilton, and Stubberfoam will provide songs to enjoy the artwork by, from 6 to 9 p.m.
Emo’s Lounge will have The Boxing Lesson headlining the evening in a show that includes Johnny Goudie & The Little Champions, and The Mercers. Inside Emo's, you'll find a show with Built By Snow, Seneca Hawk, and The Midgetmen. Don't forget the Austin Electronic Summit at Stubb's, with a multitude of digital delights from Shuttle Debris, Matson Belle, Operator, Rage Ranger, and host DJ Razorboy. Over at the Parlor on North Loop, Daniel Francis Doyle performs along with Denton's Deep Snapper. Over at Woody’s South, 123 E. Ben White Blvd., Afuche from New York and Late Night Curly from Florida will make an Austin stop on their tour, for a show that includes performances by the recently reformed 2-piece Mastertape, and Dirty Canary.
There will also be a special 14-band benefit show at Cafe Caffeine, 909 West Mary St., for Crack Pipes guitarist Billy Steve Korpis. Billy continues to undergo chemotherapy after being diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia back in April. The music starts at noon. Sending out more good wishes and positive vibes for your recovery, Billy.
Sunday has no shortage of tunes, either, dear reader. In case you forgot (and I know you didn’t...did you?), the Second Sunday Sock Hop makes the rounds again at the Longbranch Inn on E. 11th. Retro attire strongly encouraged. Make it real, people.
Some Sunday shows for your enjoyment: Mice & Rifles, Leatherbag, and Loose Leaves play at Stubb's indoor venue, and over at Beerland, it's Real Live Tigers, Sunset (the ever-marvelous Bill Baird), David Israel, and Boo Hiss. Fantastic all around, kids.
A handful of other shows I'd like to remind you about: On Tuesday, July 10, you can make your way over to the Parish for the free monthly show featuring the Jungle Rockers and Amplified Heat; the residency gig at the Mohawk featuring Horse + Donkey; and Emo’s inside for a show by Parts & Labor, When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth, and Best Fwends. Also recommended is a show on Thursday, July 12 at the Mohawk with the Starlight Mints, with local peeps Low Line Caller and The Separation opening. Sure to be a fine show, indeed.
Got enough to do? I should hope so. While you're out and about this evening, do take me along for the ride: 11 p.m. to 3 in the bloody morning, KUT 90.5 on the FM. Or stream the show, if you prefer. And remember the words of our pal, RoboCop: Thank you for your cooperation. Cough drops, anyone?

It was a crazy show night on Friday, kids. Apologies abound for my tardy column, added to the fact that I sat in for Jeff McCord on Left of the Dial and did not do my usual show. Oopsie! Thanks again to Chris Hillen for sitting in for me afterward. Hope you saw a lot of great shows this weekend.
