Austinites Lookin' Out

In times like these, it's good to know that at least some folks are looking out for others.

From Craigslist:

first, to preface this... ive had close to $6k worth of bikes stolen from me in austin in the past ten years so i kind of unloaded $6k worth of stolen bike frustration on this kid tonight

i work downtown and this kid comes up trying to sell a *nice* newish k2 full suspension with a triple tree fork for 40 bucks(looks kinda like a razorback XC). knowing that noone would sell their own spendy full squish bike for only $40 i kind of jokingly asked where he stole it from. he said he popped the lock on it in south austin so i cursed at him and told him that bike thieves should be shot. he replied with 'fug it, stealing bikes is good money!' so i waved a cop over and had them arrest him.

they have the kid and the bike in custody so

if you had a red and white K2 full suspension XC mtbike stolen from south austin recently then PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE go file a police report and get your bike back just to make up for all the bikes i was never able to recover for myself

Awesome. I actually watched this kid getting arrested. We figured he had stolen the bike, but its nice to know the whole story.

    awesome, indeed!

for the downtown messengers/bike commuters - a couple of the street parking signs near congress and 9th are loose/no longer anchored to their bases.

if you lock up your bike on these (vs. a rack), make sure you check that the pole is secured to the ground. i've seen thieves just pick up the loose pole and steal all the bikes attached to them.

    You're awesome.

Chicago has great bike garages, with security, showers for commuters and everything. Austin, having such a big biking community, could definitely benefit from something like that.

Feel good story of the year. Austinist should announce an 'Austinite of the Week' award, and this person should be the first recipient.

This is so great. Let's nominate this guy for best of craigslist.

Two weekends ago my Trek 6500 was stolen out of my garage when I left it open for an hour unattended, so this guy is my hero of the moment.

Clown Dog Bikes was robbed three times in one day this week by the same person. Two days later they found the guy and got some of there stuff back, beat his ass and got him arrested. Thanks to Austin's close nit bicycle community.

Nice. My friend just told me yesterday he bought a bike for $15 from a homeless guy in front of the Alamo Drafthouse.
