Austin: Good Place to Be a Young Single?

frostrepub.jpg

Kiplinger released their picks for the top 5 cities for young singles, and Austin is among them. D.C. is their first pick; we actually place in the middle of the rankings (between Denver, CO and Raleigh, NC). Kiplingers views folks ages 25 - 29 as "young singles," and places Austin on the higher end of their Bohemian Indicator (which means we have a larger amount of people involved in the arts than the national average). By their calculations, given our artsy scene and the somewhat decent cost-of-living here, Austin is a nifty town to live solo and young in.

Here's the full list of the top 5:

  1. Washington, D.C.
  2. Denver, CO
  3. Austin, TX
  4. Raleigh, NC
  5. Lexington, KY

So do you think Kiplinger is on the money?

I'm about two decades removed from "young singledom" but I sure love it here (except June-August afternoons).

I hear they're now calling it "SEXington, Kentucky." Ooo baby.

austin is a good place to get dumped because your now-ex-boyfriend thinks he has a lot of options. you know, because the city is such a great place for singles and all.

not that i'm bitter or anything...

I just moved here from DC, lived there for 6 years, and I moved here to be with my BF who lives in Austin... uh yeah.. DC sucks for singles, especially single women, more chicks than dicks in DC believe it or not.

According to the Gittenlaid Indicator, Austin doesn't fare as well as other cities. Dallas seems to hold more luck for me in that area than other cities as of late.

Marlene is right about DC. If it weren't so congested and you didn't have to pay to park everywhere you went there (including stores like Best Buy) then I would consider it. There is tail everywhere down there...especially around Georgetown!

I hated DC as a single gal! But, I've been on lotsa dates since being back in Austin so I guess I agree that part. Just had a first kiss last night actually... *swoon*

So which cities are good for singles in their 30's?

Austin's a good city to STAY single in-- note the difference. There's so many young-ish people here that there definitely seems to be a disincliniation to commit.

If Paul Ross Evans, a butt-ugly, stupid, ex-con, accused bomber can get a girlfriend in this town, ANYBODY CAN.

There is so much to do here, so many friends' bands to go see, bars to go to, parties to attend, etc. etc. that people here seem to like to keep their options open. people actually seem pretty self-involved in this town, so they want to look out for #1 and having the best possible time. relationships can be tough work and not always 'fun' and 'laid-back,' so in a city (and city full of people) that thinks it is so easy going and full of fun, it seems people aren't really inclined to get serious. so, yea, it is good for perpetual singles.

Having to go see friend's bands every night is easily the most aggravating part of living in Austin.

I desperately want a girlfriend.

Note the time of that last entry. I think he really means it.

I agree that this is a great town to stay single in...finding love in this town on the other hand...hmmmm, not so much.

i'm not complaining!

Houston is bone-dry of singles..I'm comin' home to Austin!
