The Laurie Show

Oh, the confusion I must be causing! Sort of. Yours truly, hostess of The Laurie Show, which frightens the locals on late night Fridays, has been an on-again off-again presence. My apologies for the irregular schedule. Chris Hillen, my tag-team show partner in crime who graciously subs for me when I'm out wreaking havoc, has been a huge help. Thank you, Chris! I'm in tonight for sure, but next Friday I'll be frightening the locals in person...on stage.

Scared? You should be. Details coming soon!

For now, let us focus on the music. It's a busy time for everyone, and Emo's is surely offering quite a bit in the show department this evening. This very Friday, the outside stage will have The Hold Steady, Illinois, and Blitzen Trapper putting on the show, while an Alien Barbeque (II) will be cooking things up inside. One of my favorites, Visitors, is headling the event, which includes a long list of fellow trouble-makers: Silverback Jonz, Adrian Croom, Project Dead & Quinn C, Silverado, Jonathan McMahan, and Corto Maltese.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketEmo's Lounge is the location for the next gig by The Dirty Hearts tonight. Passed Out Fliers and the Noise Revival Orchestra Experience are on the same bill.

Further down on Red River, the Mohawk presents a most groovy set of performances by Ume, The Dolly Partners, The Plutonium Farmers, and an acoustic set by Christian Bland of The Black Angels. A must-see for a healthy dose of trippy fuzzed-out goodness.

Saturday is also full of delectable goodies all over the place. When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth have a show at Beerland, with performances by Oh Beast!, Red X Red M, and Daniel Frances Doyle.

The Carrots will open the show for Calvin Johnson at Emo's Lounge tomorrow. Songstress Julie Doiron is also playing that show. The Lovely Sparrows provide their lovely music at a gig at the Mohawk on Saturday, with Cavedwellers, Ryan Anderson, and Sharon Van Etten.

You look as though you need a good hug. So here you go: Lose yourself in the insane sonic embrace of HUG at a free show at Lovejoy's tomorrow. The Pocket Fishermen and Zero Skills Inc. join in on the happy chaos.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketThe great music carries over on Sunday, of course. Blood On the Tracks and The Politics have their show at Trophy's on South Congress. And don't forget to wish a Happy Birthday to the fine folks of Second Sunday Sock Hop at the Longbranch Inn on E. 11th St. It's the Hop's first year anniversary, and they're still spinning the finest music around. As always, retro attire is strongly encouraged, and the first 150 sock hoppers to get in will receive a special CD compilation lovingly put together by the fabulous SSSH DJ's themselves: Hucklebuck, Shorty Stump, and the right Reverend Magnus. Dig it! You do great work, gentlemen.

Say...I just remembered a handful of other groovy goings-on for next week. Monday at Emo's Lounge will feature performances by Maserati, My Education, and Lazar Wolf.

There's also time to enjoy the brand-spankin' new facilities of Austin's own Salvage Vanguard Theater at 2803 Manor Rd. Congratulations go to SVT on their new surroundings! They've invited Church of the Friendly Ghost to host a variety of music performers for an event on Tuesday. Book of Shadows, The Plutonium Farmers, Quebron, Nick Hennies and Brian Sookram, and Jerri Signfeldt's Atrophied Saq (love it, looooove it!) are on the bill. Visual installations provided by Lori "16mm" Varga. By the way, the Church guarantees "a real scary hoedown." Perfect.

Also on Tuesday: Tree Wave takes to the stage at the Mohawk. On Wednesday, a fabulous gathering of artists at the Parish, if I do say so myself, featuring The Drawing Board, The Casting Couch, and Mice and Rifles. Rumor has it that a musical octopus will join The Casting Couch on stage to play some hand bells during a couple of songs. Whoa. Check it out for yourself.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketTwo gigs to make note of for Thursday: Stubb's will have a show on their inside stage with Dreamt The End, Dynah and Sleepless Me. Also, my pal, Party Ends mastermind John Gross, has reminded me about a Party Ends spectacular event highlighting huge Austin sounds and "the best freestyles in the world." This time, Party Ends takes the party to the Mohawk on Thursday for performances by Astronautilis, 'Til We're Blue Or Destroy, and The Magic Surprise on the inside stage. DJ Markus With A K spins between sets.

Got your calendar filled already? Somehow, my instinct tells me I didn't even begin to cover half of it. In any case, you know where to find me tonight: 11 p.m. to 3 a.m., KUT 90.5 on the FM. Enjoy all the tunes, friends. And...well, you know the drill by now. Thank you for your cooperation.
