It's All About You: First Person Arts Memoir Writing Competition
With the sweaty season officially in full swing here in Austin, Philadelphia-based First Person Arts has given us good reason to stick around in air-conditioned climes. Yesterday was the official call for entries in the 6th Annual First Person Arts Memoir Writing Competition. Now instead of trudging about in the soup you can spend time inside articulating your inner-most thoughts for a shot at some prestige in print-form.
This year's contest features two categories: Short Memoirs (3,000 words or less) and Short-Short Memoirs (500 words or less). The presiding theme for both categories is "Objects of My Affection." Entrants are encouraged to write about their relationship with an important object, or objects, and how that relationship has had a meaningful effect on their life.
Will you write about that special breakfast taco that saved your life on a hungover Sunday? Will you write about the lust for a taco you knew could never exist that drove you to the brink of iniquity and back? Or will you write about cassingles? The possibilities are many and those are three very good ones.
The chance for glory comes at a price: the entry fee is $10 for the Short Memoir category and $5 for the Short-Short Memoir. You can enter memoirs in both categories, but you may win only one. The winning stories will be published in both the print and online editions of the Philadelphia City Paper. Winners will also be invited to read their memoirs aloud in Philly during the First Person Arts Festival this November. The deadline for entries is a very firm August 15th. Check out the competition's official site for complete rules and instructions.
