New Release Tuesday: Dappled Cities, Shellac & Pelican

There are quite a few mentionables this week, including Dappled Cities' Granddance, produced by Jim Fairchild (of Grandaddy) and Peter Walker, and mixed by Jaquire King (Modest Mouse). Dappled Cities are an Australian indie rock band that we've grown rather fond of as of late, mostly because of "Fire, Fire Fire". Also of note this week is the latest from Ladybug Transistor and the latest Eccentric Soul compilation, The Prix Label. As usual, do your shopping locally when you can: get on your bike and head to Waterloo or End of an Ear and shop away.

"This microphone turns sound into electricity!" is one of the first things we hear Steve Albini exclaim during Greyhound's opening bars, as part of a long (nearly 5 minute) introduction to the album. Always spitting in the face of expectation and convention, Albini, Weston and Trainer have written another brilliant album together, full of all the noise, angularity and frustration we've come to know and love. "Steady As She Goes" and "Elephant" stand out as testaments to Albini's dedication to form, while "Kittypants" flows almost like a love song. The band hasn't released anything since 1000 Hurts in 2000, but have been playing several songs from Greyhound in live sets the last few years, including "End of Radio" and "Paco". The album is named in honor of drummer Todd Trainer's Italian Greyhound, Uffizi, who is featured in the album art surrounded by fruits and vegetables. Oh, Uffizi.

Since we know how much Austin music lovers love the post-metal music scene, we'd be remiss not to mention the release of Pelican's latest full-length. For fans of Boris, Sun O))), Red Sparowes, Jesu and Isis, Pelican's sound won't necessarily sound like anything new, but wrapping all the good aspects of post-rock and metal into one (very) tight instrumental album is no small feat, considering the challenge for artists in this genre is to somehow bridge the gap between cinematic soundscapes and raw, guitar-driven pummelings. It's rough, but Pelican are fairly apt. The first few listens will be exciting for fans of the genre, but in the end we predict listeners will find themselves suffering from Explosions Syndrome: lacking heart and stuck in an elevator unable to get up or down.
