Now now, institutions are subjective. I'd say while the MEC has the feel and the frito pie to constitute "Austin Institution" the people that go there (yuppie kids too old to go to 6th street but too young to go to Lala's) and the lack of seating despite the obvious space make it un-Austin-Institution. That and it hasn't been with us long enough.

Obviously, you've never been there. Or you haven't noticed how quickly bars and clubs in this town turn over. I don't care if it's been there 3 years or 3 months -- the place is wonderful and the atmosphere can't be beat. Besides that, it's Austin's best kept live music secret.

What? What is the new definition of Austin Institution? That bar opened around 3 years ago. The building's an institution, but the bar? Next you'll be calling for us to save Vicci or something...
