Frisbee: It’s Not Just For Hippies Anymore!

crowd06.jpg

This weekend, LiveLogic and AISD is hosting the Texas Shootout Tournament, an Ultimate Frisbee tournament featuring the AISD high school All-Star game and the Battle of Texas featuring two of the best Ultimate teams in the State. Tonight’s games take place at House Park Stadium at 15th and Lamar. Saturday and Sunday’s games move to the UT Rec fields at 51st and Guadalupe.

Don’t know much about Ultimate Frisbee you say? Well, the sport itself has been around since the 1960’s and has become one of the largest underground international sports around. The game is part American Football part keep-away using a flying disc. There are seven players from each team on a field similar to a football field. Play begins when the players, standing in their own end zones, throw pull the disc toward the opposite team’s end zone. The process of “pulling” and “hucking” the disc among teammates continues until the disc is either intercepted by the opposite team, the disc is dropped or points are scored. Ultimate is non-contact and there are no refs and players are expected to call themselves out when they foul. Play continues until one of the teams reaches a predetermined set score or time limit. There are a ton of other innuendos and terms that Austinist can spend days explaining, but why don’t you come check out the games for yourself?
