I have a favor to ask, if I may be so bold: Will someone PLEASE give me an extra dose of caffeine?
Yours truly, hostess of The Laurie Show, has been working double time at KUT 90.5. Today is an extra challenge. I'll be sitting in during the afternoon drive for the vacationing afternoon show host Bob Branson, from 3 to 7 p.m. this afternoon. Then, after a rather short break, I return to the airwaves for The Laurie Show at 11 p.m.
What...on earth...am I thinking?
No matter. If I get to play music tonight, that's all that counts. And it looks as though I'll have a lot to choose from, judging by all the parties and events going on throughout Memorial Day Weekend. True, some of us have to work, but there's always time for music, especially when it's live...
This evening is overflowing in that department. Of course, most of you must know about Voxtrot's CD release extravaganza tonight at Emo's. Au Revoir Simone, The Black, and Zykos will be part of the festivities.
But does it stop there? No! Mary Timony performs tonight at Club DeVille, with Lalaland and Horse + Donkey getting the show started. Don't forget that Clap!Clap!, Crash Gallery, and Devil In A Choir have a gig at the Beauty Bar tonight. A birthday bash for bassist Misti Watkins of The Dirty Hearts will feature live music by Secret Weapons, Mr. and Mrs. Mays, Manager’s Choice, and of course, The Dirty Hearts at the Parlor on North Loop this evening. Ain't nothin' like birthday cake and beer.
If you catch the Matt & Kim performance at the Mohawk tonight, with Houston band Fatal Flying Guilloteens, venture inside for performances by Sara Beck (Pink Nasty), All Hail, Deleted Scenes, and Darling New Neighbors. At Stubb's this evening, My Education headlines the inside stage, with Aster, Corto Maltese, and Built By Snow on the show list.
Then, time to revive yourself for Saturday. If you're out and about the South Congress hood, I'd like to recommend a matinee with The Texas Sapphires at the Continental Club from 3 to 6 p.m. Did someone say happy hour specials? Woo hoo!
There'll be a great show with Melt Banana at Emo's tomorrow night. Also on the bill: XBXRX and Finally Punk, all on the outside stage.
Speaking of Emo's, don't forget the From the Monolith Fest continues through the Memorial Day Weekend. Check Emo's website for all the band listings and performance times.
At the Scoot Inn tomorrow night, The Last Gasp shares the stage with Radar, Radar, The Daze, and Ledaswan. Saturday night on the Drag you'll find a show featuring Brother Will and Family, Cue, and ‘Til We’re Blue Or Destroy at Hole In the Wall. And the bear that makes me happy, Golden Bear, plays with Corto Maltese, Hacienda, and Gwendor at Beerland.
Aw, man. I'm running late. I need to be the voice that people hear when they drive home in the afternoon from work. But you know the drill for late night tonight: 11 p.m. to 3 in the frickin' morning, KUT 90.5 on the FM. Have yourselves a wonderful weekend, and drink extra for us working slobs, won't you?
And, in the words of the great RoboCop, thank you for your cooperation.

Laurrie -- hardest working woman in radio, I tell ya ! :-)
Yes, that she is! And I'm glad. I want more Laurie... every day on KUT should be a Laurie day. Do people really even listen to all those roots and blues shows during the week? I mean I like the blues and all...
