Now will you please get your nose out of my ass so I can stop thinking about this shit and we can talk abotu Factory People and how much it sucks or rocks depending on how much or little imagination or money you have?

This has nothing to do with Factory People so I don't even know why I'm getting into it or how it's any of your busines, but healthcare is expensive, especially if you're as fucked up as I am. And what seems almost more expensive than health care? Health Insurance. If the idiots in Washington would get their shit together and make health care or health insurance affordable for everyone I wouldn't have to make crap wages just so I can get health insurance at a rate I can afford. since I am not old enough or fucked up enough yet to get medicare/medicaid.

But that's not the point. The point is, I make what should be enough to get by and afford a few little luxuries. But greedy rich people keep insisting on "restoring" (knocking the character right out of) affordable homes or destroying them so they can make even more money and hoard it like Midus and be greedy little fat pigs. If I can barely afford to house, feed, clothe, and keep myself warm in the winter and cool in the summer, what about all the really old people on pensions and the young mothers making $5.15 and hour at the McDonalds? Where are the opportunites for them?

Like I said, I'm lucky. In fact, I am so lucky I can't get anyone else to hire my lucky ass because there are plenty of people needing jobs in this town and nobody wants to hire someone that's already got a job making more than minimum wage and had benefits.

The reason I am angry is that I'm finding it hard to get by and I am not even in the deepest shit.

My friends aren't married and they live alone. Like I said, they make about $35k-$45/year, so probably twice as much as Ol'Pap.

I know this sounds harsh Pap, but maybe you should be looking for another job instead of playing on Austinist while at work. $10/hour is less than what Rudy's BBQ pays, so I don't know why you're working for some lawyer and hating it (judging from your comments at other points on this site) instead of carving BBQ (and possibly hating it, but at least being paid better).

I know I exaggerated about how much rent costs. It's only about 2/3 of my pay maybe? But really - it seems like I'd be able to have a shot at something in this town if the damn landlords would put a cap of say $600/month for a goddamn efficiency.

I don't know how your friends do it either. I don't know how I can live in an apartment complex with 50 Mexican families with at least 4 kids in each of them and a baby on the way and the moms never work and somehow they survive. I don't know why 3/4 of every paycheck has to go to my dump of an apartment complex and yet - it's the cheapest thing I can find and it's not even Central. I don't know how it all works out. Maybe your friends have rich parents and they help them out. Maybe they're married and two folks of working age and abilities are better than one. I have no idea where the money goes but for me it goes straight from the bank and into my landlord's wallet.

Like I've said here before, I should be making enough to get by - about $20,000 a year give or take - but it's not. And it's getting worse every time I have to move because the landlord is raising the rent and I am on the verge of dropping out of society cause what's the point when I'm holding on by a thread and I'm one of the lucky ones?

I'm really interested in how Ol'Pappy works for a lawyer and makes so little money that he can't afford ANYTHING at all.

I've got friends who make $40k in this city who save a little money every month, have a decent new car (Honda Civic or something similar), have internet and/or cable at home, pay a few hundred bucks a month towards a college loan, and still manage to buy more than ramen noodles. Oh, and yes, they live in relatively small 1 bedroom apartments in central Austin.

I'm not saying it's impossible for Ol'Pappy to be in his situation, but I'm confused. What's the point of working 40 hours a week for a lawyer if you can't afford ANYTHING?

I work two jobs doing work that makes me happy AND helps people, never facing the risk of becoming bitter and cynical like you. I can shop wherever I want because I am smart and frugle. The upside of working two jobs (right now I take home under $35,000 a year in earnings) is that I make enough money to save a bit, donate to needy causes, pay my bills and shop for things that I like. Apparently I am willing to work harder than you. I live in a beautiful neighborhood in a $570 (large) apartment, so apparently I am also willing to look harder for a good place to live than you. I disagree with you on the economics, Pappy. I don't think building expensive condos drives up the price of housing any more than Factory People's existence drives up the price of t-shirts at Goodwill. I think the fact that Factory People adds $65 t-shirts to the overall t-shirt supply reduces the demand for other t-shirts and lowers the cost of t-shirts overall. I think when Factory People closes, there will be more people scouring Goodwill racks for T's, reducing their supply and increasing their price, as you indicated earlier. I think the same thing about condos. I think if enough condos are built, it will increase the supply of condos, so that the price of condos will drop. I think the thing that is going to make Austin an unaffordable place to live is if we don't build those condos and the supply is limited, so the condos that we have are hyper-expensive, which is where I think we are now.

Personally, my salary isn't based on how much good I do in the world, or what kind of influence I have, or your dreams. It is based on how much people with money are willing to pay me for my time. If we lived in a dream world, I would have chosen a different career (blogger comes to mind).

ol'pappy, I enjoy your posts mostly but you are way off on goodwill. I realize you might mean all this in jest, but I will go ahead and correct you anyway. In reality the majority of the organization helps unemployed and under-employed individuals such as yourself (from what I gather) find better jobs - not necessarily at their stores. The stores do provide jobs for some, but mainly it funds their other activities. That is to say, they help people with their resumes, finding child care, interviewing skills and finding a job. Check it out by googling Austin Goodwill and then employment services. Maybe they could help you find a job with a living wage - and I say that seriously and without a hint of snark.

In my dream-world, teachers make way more than lawyers, hell, roofers make more than lawyers, but then again, you'd be making more than pop-stars so you'd be able to afford a nice double-wide trailer as a lawyer.

In my dream world, someone in my position makes nothing because that's what they deserve helping out a lawyer that would rather play golf than deal with document production.

AND ANOTHER THING!

Goodwills in other cities aren't nearly as expensive as the ones here. In other cities in Texas they have half off days and dollar days. Sure they're helping people get jobs that really need them and can't find them, but honestly, you feel exploited working for Goodwill. Like everyone is doing you a favor to let you work 10 hour days 7 days a week so they can hold you up and say, "See what good we do?". Salvation Army has more recognizable influence in this city. How many homeless shelters does Goodwill have? None.

I've volunteered at the Salvation Army and it's not the best place to get a meal or a bed or drop off your kids and pick up a clean shirt so you can look for a job but at least it's there and it's open to anyone and it's visible which is more than I can say for what I've seen Goodwill do.

I'm a lawyer. Hard at work behind a desk all day. But, I knew what I signed up for and I don't complain about it. I get paid what I expected to get paid when I took the job. No one is taking advantage of me. I worked some shitty jobs before I went to college (some harder than others), then I worked as an engineer, then I went to law school. I work harder as a lawyer than I did before. When I said I was lucky, part of what I meant is that I am lucky enough to have been able to put myself in the position that I am in, but I still put myself here.

I'm not sure what you mean by "Banana Republican," but I can't imagine any meaning that would align with the stances I take on this blog. My goal here is mainly to promote New Urbanism in Austin. Republicans tend to promote surburban sprawl. Banana Repulicans tend to promote right-wing dictatorships in Central America.

I have worked at Goodwill and trust me when I say you do not want to work there. It sucks. Worst job I have ever had. Those people are unreasonable, the management sucks, they don't care if you're about to die of heat exhaustion or have worked a month straight and just want one day off. I'd never ever EVER work there again.

Pretty close. I actually live in a 1950's house in Deep Eddy, not a bungalow in Hyde Park. I drink regular coffee (but I prefer good beans). Half-and-half, with no sugar. No kids and no dog, but I have a kid on the way. I actually had a golden retriever when I was a kid. My wife and I go to the Town Lake Animal Center a lot, but will probably stop when it moves. If I was going to get a dog, I think I'd like to get a black poodle.

I've never bought anything at Factory People, but I like their stuff in the abstract and went by this weekend to see if I could get a good deal on anything I liked. I didn't come away with anything. I almost bought a Yoshitomo Nara sculpture, but they were out of the one I liked and weren't discounting them anyway. If I am buying that style clothes, I tend to prefer Service Menswear and Metropark (especially for Obey stuff). I don't buy clothes at J. Crew, Abercrombie, or Goodwill.

Also, as Dave Chapelle would say, I'm rich, biatch. Not George Bush rich (or Dave Chapelle rich), but certainly $35 t-shirt rich. Part of that is because I am lucky. Part is because I work hard and have made earning money a priority. But, I'm not an asshole.

Last time I checked, Goodwill existed not to provide clothes and other used goods at a discount, but to provide jobs for the otherwise unemployable with a livable wage. You can read all about Goodwill's mission and how they operate at Goodwill dot org.

If you want cheap goods, go to St. Vincent De Paul (I would assume), the Salvation Army, or garage sales. Those businesses exist to sell goods to people who can't afford them.

For Goodwill to succeed as an organization, the more rich people that shop there, the better.

And, if you're having trouble finding a decent paying job, maybe you should apply at Goodwill.

To clarify why I don't want you shopping at Goodwill, orchard:

Let's say I go into St. Vincent De Paul looking for a bookshelf. I'm gonna have about $10.00 at the most to spend on one because I am cheap and I don't make a lot of money and a huge portion of my paycheck goes towards rent for my shitty apartment. So let's say I ride the 1M down there and find me a nice little bookshelf and it's $25. Obviously I am not going to buy that shelf because it's not within my budget. But let's say 10 more poor people go and look at that shelf and all of them go, "No, not now. Too much money." All of us thinking it's too expensive gets wiped out when a rich person like yourself goes into that store and squeals, "ONLY $25! I'LL TAKE TWO!".

Same thing is going on with housing. Rich people are getting richer. The middle class is making $80,000 a year. And the working class isn't making a damn penny higher. And yet, housing, rent, everything is going up up up to fit what YOU will pay even if the majority of people in the world can't afford a $1000 one bedroom on North Lamar and Rundburg.

So please, stop spending money in poor people stores.

I sort of agree, but I don't think the clothes have much to do with it. I think its more an attitude thing. There's always elitist douchebags in every segment of society. Many people feel a need to belong to some kind of group or culture, and some take it to the extreme of "well mine is better than yours". This is true of the 'hipster' element, the "keep austin weird" element and every other one. FactoryPeople was the sort of mecca of the austin hipsters and I think this is why it attracts criticism from those who for whatever reason, really hate hipsters. I'm sure not everyone agrees with me on that though.

As a friend and fan of the Factory, I know for a fact that they have a very successful business model... they are changing course from brick and mortar to online because it is just plain smart. Why pay for 4 walls when you don't have to. They have a huge online presence and that is the progression of what they have spent 3.5 years establishing. None of you narrow-minded folks would understand that. It's the future people, the future. They will have an online store and a traveling store, one that will set up a few times a year in cities where the demographic will go wiggy for them! It's forward thinking, creative and brilliant. And they will have more time for family, friends, travel, and other creative ventures. I am envious. It sounds like the good life to me! And I wish them all the best... you nay-sayers and malcontents are just jealous. Go get yourself a good idea and make it successful. The best thing about the domain is Martin + Osa. Its reasonabily priced and the fabrics are awesome. Think bananna republic / J Crew but all the stuff are just very comfortable classics no logos or dressy stuff. The staff is really nice and they have a fridge full of Fiji for these hot days.

I could only afford a few T-shirts (on sale, of course). I'm never going to spend $300 on a cotton dress but it was still fun to look around. The "shop kids" were always helpful to me and took time to chat.
