There's really no way to talk about just one of the bands that's playing tonight at Emo's. Though not widely praised in Austin's rock-loving community, we think they're wonderful, each with its own fanciful and individual personality. Come early. Be loud. Stay late. Avoid the bathroom.
Headlining the show are locals The Boxing Lesson, whose lo-fi and indie sounds "deserve more of a following" says The Chron. Also, you'll get another chance to see Tussle, the San Francisco instrumental electro-pop four-piece who opened just a few weeks ago for Hot Chip. Since we haven't really listened to their 2006 release Telescope Mind, we can't really say too much; though most are calling it Krautrock-ish, foot-tapping good.
YACHT, alias Jona Bechtolt and one half of Portland's The Blow, fashions his own, more synth, version of light-hearted and quirky indie/electro pop on his album I Believe In You. Your Magic Is Real., which has garnered positive reviews from a vast array of cool publications. Not to mention the fact that he's been touring with LCD Soundsystem (swoon). We're just hoping he can equal Khaela's (the other half of The Blow) solo/fantastic performances from last fall (Emo's) and New Year's (Mohawk).
Finally, local-ish (Ft. Worth/Austin) guys Best Fwends will open. This is why you're coming early. Seriously. Get there on time. These guys got signed to London's Moshi, Moshi label and have since been featured on a U.K. Bacardi commercial as well as a video for Bird's Barbershop. Their stuff is like the craziest parts of Animal Collective (in town Sunday!) and reminds us of Four Tet's "No More Mosquitos" with its insect-inspired repetition. You might even catch one of them in their underwear.
