Darlin' Don't You Go and Cut Your Hair

haircut.jpg

Salons here are like coffee shops in New York. It seems like there’s a cute, hip one on every street corner – which isn’t necessarily a bad thing; it just gives us more options to find that special someone who'll give us the perfectly groomed-but-casual Austin look. But don’t forget about the bottom line! Find out if your salon gives people in the service industry a discount with proof of a paycheck stub (such as Sage Salon on 4111 Medical Parkway, Ste. 111, and its brand-spanking-new location on 237 W. Third St.) or free bang trims. If you’re willing to take a risk on your hair, many salons will use you as a hair model.

Maximum FX Wellness Spa and Salon, on 1007 South Congress, needs models on Tuesday mornings for cuts and Wednesday morning for color. Cuts are free, and those wanting to color their hair pay a product charge of $25. Call the salon with your hair type and length to get put on a list, and the apprentices will set up an appointment with you.

We were going to compile a list of salons offering similar deals but we, erm, didn’t want to use our cell phone minutes. If you find out other salons that will cut you a deal, post them here.

Nice pavement quote...but why is that man's head sticking through a kiddie pool?

Most salons that do training have days where you can get free or discounted cuts. i know that Toni & Guy and Visible Changes in the mall(s) have specific training days where they give haircuts and/or color for a discounted price. Most higher end salons give free bang trims, as well, though most other places charge about $5, which is pretty close to free.

Just remember, just because the cut/color is free or discounted, doesn't mean you shouldn't tip your stylist at least a few bucks for their time (if you like it, of course). A lot of the time, those people are getting paid close to minimum wage (most of the time, they are apprenticing, not actually working on the floor yet, so they make very little money), and $3 is a treat and helps them buy lunch or something during the day.

have you been to new york lately (aka in the last ten years)? all those cute coffee shops on every corner are called STARBUCKS. totally not even a joke about the proliferation of starbucks, i just couldn't even believe that it was actually true even after i saw it.
