If you're concerned about your cat's weight, you should feed it less food. You can also get it to exercise by playing with it with a lazer pointer or a feather on a stick or a shoestring or whatever it is that fascinates your cat.

My cat has all of his claws. I don't live near a highway either. I live close (not next to) to a busy street, though, and there are many feral cats in the neighborhood. Not to mention, every vet, shelter and vet tech i've talked to stress the importance of keeping cats indoors if you want them to live past 10 years. So...what would your advice be then Jessica? I hope your cats are spayed or neutered.

  • Jessica

Well, I'd start by not declawing your cat so that it can defend itself when it is outside. Then consider moving away from the highway. Most can fend for themselves, though.

Re: The story about obese animals: the way they advise cats to get excercise, letting them roam outside, may be practical in mostly rual NZ, but in places like the US, where most pets are owned by people in urban areas is not a good solution. I never let my cat outside, ever. He could get sick by other roaming feral cats, get into fights, get mauled by a dog, run over by a car, eat bad/diseased trash, etc etc. So, what are pet owners supposed to do in that situation?
