Official 2007 ACL Lineup Released

acl-lineup.jpg

The Austin City Limits Festival lineup is official, making this year's three day event a legitimate item of lust. In addition to the names you see there, the fest will include performances by Peter, Bjorn & John, Midlake, The National, Yo La Tengo, Sound Team, Pete Yorn, Ghostland Observatory, Joseph Arthur and many more.

Right now, tickets are $145, and VIP passes are $1,700. VIP access, in case you're wondering if its worth the money, is essentially access to the shaded area you probably walked by and longed for last year. VIP ticket holders get remarkable benefits such as complimentary water, chairs, and "snacks". No stage access is available with the VIP pass.

The festival will run its usual three days across eight stages, this year featuring 130 bands. Mid-September (not surprisingly) remains the preferred time, as the fest kicks off on Sept. 14 and wraps on the 16th.

For more information on the festival, the bands, the VIP pass, and much more, head over to the website's "More Stuff" page, where you can look over iPod and PDA tools, schedules, ringtones (!), and the festival's green policies.

boycott this corporate acl festival taking hush money from AMD until they stop the new office complex on has Polluted the Barton Springs watershed in Zilker Park with huge amounts of sediment that washed off their sites with modest rains on March 26Th(1.49 inches at Camp Mabry and 1.2 inches at the airport). It was enough to wash untold amounts of construction pollution off two large building sites in the fragile Barton Springs watershed. Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) polluted the Barton Springs segment of the Edwards Aquifer with dirty runoff leaving their construction sites. Fortunately, we were there to take pictures and video of the pollution.

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is building an 860,000 square foot office complex in the Barton Springs watershed. Rains on March 26Th washed construction sediment over, around, and literally through AMD's erosion and sedimentation "controls." The result is muddy, silt-laden water leaving the site and flowing into a tributary of the Barton Springs segment of the Edwards Aquifer.

Save Our Springs Alliance and many other groups and thousands of citizens urged AMD not to move to the Barton Springs watershed, in part because of concerns that they would pollute the aquifer and springs during construction. AMD insisted that they would their project would be "green. The City of Austin has reportedly given AMD a notice of violation of city rules, but the City did not issue a stop-work order or fine AMD.

please tell all the bands this there will be a protest this year will presidential hopefuls coming to Austin where the fuck you going to cool off if it gets into the 100,s like most years Visit the SOS Alliance Website

    Crowded House could be good.

Zap Mama was great when I saw them at Bass a few years ago.

  • ColSanders

When do ONE day tix go on sale???

    ThankYou

  • Stan

As long as she's not playing during Dylan, I'm there.

  • whatdoiknow?

Stan, all sarcasm aside (mine), I fully see your point. In ACL's past festivals, Bjork would seem completely out of place. I've been so giddy and excited all day about the lineup that it clouded my reading and comprehension ability.

    Cheers!

  • Jennifer

Am I only the only person here excited about Crowded House coming to ACL ? Oh well...

CH is not the only band I'm looking forward to seeing. I'm looking forward to seeing Peter Bjorn and John, Muse, Kaiser Chiefs, Ben Kweller, Decemberists, and Paolo Nutini for starters.

  • pd

whatdoiknow?, I think they are nailing the demographic pretty well. It is obvious that Capital Sports & Entertainment books similar acts for both Lollapalooza and ACL Fest, but save the hip-hop acts for Lolla and the country/alt-country acts for ACL--I think thats the demographic.

  • whatdoiknow?

    Stan,

I don't recall REM, Coldplay, Tom Petty, Oasis, Black Crowes, Elvis Costello, or Dashboard Confessional at their commercial peak in 2004 opening the 2004 Athens Olympics, so yeah..I'm going to gander to say Bjork is bigger than all of them.

ACL is still fairly new on the festival scene, but with baby steps and patience, they are starting to nail their demographic.

Bjork plays so few live shows that she immediately sells out any venue she chooses no matter the size. I do feel she has more drawing power than the aforementioned based on that fact alone despite not having mainstream play.

As for popularity of her music and the ability of an average person to name a Bjork song, I will concede your point. Those same people are more likely to be found at a Fergie concert though, so I'm not sure how that applies to this lineup.

(Note: I hope you enjoy seeing my woman. I'll be the one with the samurai sword ensuring no one frowns during her show)

  • k

i still think it's 1,500 times better than last year's lineup.

i'm stoked on dylan, but when i saw him when i lived in las vegas he didn't even look a guitar much less play one. that was a huge letdown.

  • Stan

That Dylan show at the Erwin Center was the worst of the 10 or so times I've seen him in the past 10 years.

The two at the Backyard in 2003 (I believe) were way better with him playing keyboard/piano most of the show(s).

Wilco didn't play ACL last year (I believe), but have played 3 or 4 of the previous ones. I'd like them to play a different set and maybe being here right after the release of a new album will help. I'm looking forward to seeing them again.

  • pd

Like always, i'm going to ACL no matter what...but, I agree with the majority of comments here--I saw Bob Dylan a few years back at The Frank Erwin Center and he was very uninspiring. I trust Bjork will be solid, and probably not that packed (one can hope). If The White Stripes' performance is anything like The Racounters performance last year, i'm in.

Blonde Redhead is playing (they're in smaller print); Decemberists put on one of the best shows two ACL's ago. So did Bloc Party. The 'second tier' is almost better than the first. Plus, Wilco headlined the first ACL and I think they've been at every one since, but is anyone else tired of them playing the same set every time they come to Austin? ...I was crossing my fingers for Daft Punk...

Overall, worth my money, but not the best festival of the year...plus, i'll wait for the aftershows for the bigger names.

  • k8

Wow, I can't believe that anyone is complaining about this lineup at all. I agree with the comment that this is 85000x better than last year.

    I'm already excited for September!

  • Dan Atkinson

Blonde Redhead IS playing... They are on the third tier of acts, which for whatever reason is not included in the Austinist lineup image.

Go to the official ACL fest page for the full lineup. There are a number of stellar acts in the third tier.

Overall, I'm pretty excited about this year's lineup.

  • Stan

Both Blonde Redhead and Kings of Leon are missing from the list given previous rumors, etc.

And, Bob Dylan has been playing with his hair on stage since like... 1973 (except during the Rolling Thunder tour, where he wore white facepaint and a ridiculous hat).

  • Stan

    whodoiknow? --

Is Bjork really as big as REM? Coldplay? Tom Petty? Oasis? Black Crowes? Elvis Costello? (Dare I say Dashboard Confessional at their commercial peak in 2004? Or The Pixies at the height of reunion mania?)

For the fanbase that Coachella is looking to attract: Sure, Bjork is probably a big draw.

But look at the rest of the bill for ACL Fest and at past years. Bjork isn't really in the demographic that this festival attempts to attract (from what I can tell, given the reappearance of Wilco and/or Ben Harper almost every year).

I definitely don't think Bjork has the drawing power of the aforementioned big names of past years. As an average person to name a song by the previous headliners, you have a pretty good shot that they can name one and/or at least have heard the music. Bjork? You might be lucky to get a swan joke.

(Note: I still want to see her, so don't get all defensive for your woman)

  • Wes

The headliners are just okay but the middle tier kills.

  • d

Wasn't Blonde Redhead supposed to play ACL?

  • b

i guesss it's considered heretical not to place bob dylan first on the ACL list. but i saw him a few years back, and my takeaway from the experience was not musical. i mean, he was good, but not, like, *fiery* good. and what i left the show thinking was: why did that guy keep touching his hair? because the hair strolking was really kind of consistent and deliberate, like he was considering whether next time he should use dippity-do instead of l'oreal mega hold.

on the other hand, i saw regina spektor pretty recently, and she's sort of like...all you might expect of a formidable russian poet minus the angst plus the cuteness minus the pretension plus a precious, full-blown warble. also, she gave a show that was full length +.

  • whatdoiknow?

Bjork is headlining 7 festivals (not counting ACL) including Coachella, Sasquatch and Roskilde this year. All signs point to yes when asked if she rocked out Coachella and her NYC stops so far. Saying she "isn't large enough to really headline this kind of thing" really destroys your credibility. I am glad you are still planning to have fun, though...that's what it's all about. I'll be there in my swan dress...

  • ryan

what a line up this year. Queen's of the Stone Age, White Stripes, Bjork...huge.

Even those who are one the fence about Muse may be swayed, they have that great stadium sound that will mesh well with the venue. As will the Killers.

allright ACL - you win, here's my money.

  • eric

I'll give you the small print comment. Completely opposite of last year, 90% of the bands I want to see this year are in the top two tiers and there are only 4 or 5 that excite me in the bottom, which is the bulk of the lineup. I just hope that all the top tier stuff that I want to see doesn't conflict too much.

  • Stan

For what it's worth: If Dylan plays "Ain't Talkin" from his last album, it'll be worth the price of admission.

If/When he drags out his spookier new(er) songs live, it's always amazing. Saw him do "Man in the Long Black Coat" from Oh Mercy years ago and it was awesome. Same with live versions of "Love Sick" and "Mississippi".

The only downer is when he tries to do something like "Tangled Up In Blue" and the lyrics are all there.. but the melody is completely gone.

  • Stan

I just don't think most of the bands in the small print are that interesting.

But yes, I am excited by the top two tiers. I just think the overall bill is thinner because of that.

I've seen most of the bands in the top two tiers, but there aren't many that I'd say "Don't waste your time going to see them." Which is good.

Muse is probably the only band in the big font that I won't even try to see.

  • eric

Well, Stan, it depends on who you are and what you like. I'd say the top half of this year's lineup is at least 85000 times better than last year (for me). I'd actually love/like to see all 11 of the biggest names this year where I couldn't have cared less about most of the biggest names last year. I loved last year's fest, but I'm definitely more excited for this year. Regina Spektor, Devotchka, Andrew Bird, M.I.A. and the Decemberists as the 2nd tier makes me swoon.

  • Stan

Not the best lineup they've ever had -- I don't think Dylan, Bjork, or The White Stripes are large enough to really be "headliners" at this kind of thing -- but I'm still planning to have fun. Of course, I didn't expect Van Morrison to be such a huge draw either.

There are enough bands to make it enjoyable for me.
