Homes Sweet Homes

We were excited to find out that we no longer have to rely on walking our dog by at night to see the inside of those cool old houses near Duval St. because this Saturday, they will be open to the public as part of the Heritage Society of Austin’s 15th Annual Homes Tour. This year’s theme is “Duval Street in the 20’s,” and six of those beauties will be part of a walking tour that lets you check them out in the light of day. Without any potential peeping Tom issues.

The houses are in close proximity to one another, so you can walk from site to site at your leisure between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Docents will be present at each house to show you around and share interesting history and architecture tidbits.

In conjunction with this event, there will also be a free presentation about the Duval ‘hood in the 20s this Thursday night at the Harry Ransom Center. Or do it up right and buy tickets to the Swanky Soiree on Thursday, which will guarantee you space at the presentation and also get you some libations and gastronomic delights (or, booze and grub).

And if you’re looking to do something nice for mom but want to keep Sunday free for yourself, this is perfect. (Sorry Mom, but Sundays are for Barton Springs…)

Tour tickets are $12 for HSA members and $15 for non members. Tickets to the Swanky Soiree are $20. You can buy 'em all here.

That's a really nice house there on the corner of 32nd and Harris Park. Their new landscaping is good, but the use of steel is a bit weird. Especially as "edging" around the bamboo bed. It's thin, and potentially very sharp if you fall on it -- a bad combination for a house with kids.

I am not going to this thing unless they give me the house in the pikchur for free.

"close proximity"
as opposed to....? distant proximity?
