New Vintage Boutique La Luz Opens

“I’ve loved vintage all my life,” says Sarah Evans, co-owner of La Luz, a new vintage housewares and clothing store on South 1st Street. “When I was seven I was sifting through thrift stores. I never thought I’d have my own store.”

Last year, Sarah was working a desk job she hated, and eventually quit after her “80th nervous breakdown.” While telling us this, her boyfriend, Ace San Miguel, says, “I told her, ‘You can’t go back.’”

After months of soul searching, Sarah and Ace decided to open up a boutique with Sarah’s father, an avid fan of antiques. The idea wasn’t too far-fetched for the couple, since they both had experience selling vintage goods on consignment at Prototype Vintage—co-owned by Ace’s sister Audrie San Miguel—and House of Dang in Dallas. La Luz carries an assortment of goods for the home (furniture, lighting, glassware), plus vintage clothing, shoes, jewelry and handbags. Designs range from mod to art-deco.

“What we want it to be, and hope it is, is a good mix of vintage and antiques as well as modern... A mix of styles and eras,” says Sarah.

Sarah wants to organize trunk shows featuring Texas designers in the future. Some of the art and designs on consignment include Yellow Tape by Kendra Loposer (costumes created by Kendra for Yellow Tape's theatre and dance productions), Cahoots Handbags and framed photography by Ashley Cherry.

The couple said it took a while to find the right location for the boutique, but they were lucky in finding such a large space (formerly Hot Rod Betties salon) for an affordable price. The space is so big, in fact, that the owners walled off a third of the building and intend to rent it to another business. There’s also a really nice patio in the back of the building, overlooking Bouldin Creek, that would be perfect for movie nights or wine-tastings, says Ace.

Both Ace and Sarah smile when they talk about the future possibilities for La Luz. They are looking to the entrepreneurs they know for inspiration, but, Ace adds, “We really want to make a name for ourselves.”
