Artemus Ward, Abe Lincoln's favorite comedic wit, became a smash success on two continents using a bumbling neebish character. People would come to the theater expecting this comic genuis, an announcement would be made that Mr. Ward was ill, and a subsitute would be performing, and after about 15 minutes of Ward's fumbling, almost pathetic performance, they realized the joke. Andy Kaufmann's "Foreign Little Man" used the same technique.
