If you have already failed and re-upped your New Year’s resolutions more times than you can count, take heart – tomorrow is another day (to fail). No, but seriously, we're fortunate to live in a town where there's a whole subculture of masochists who organize events around such activities as running, biking, swimming, and various combinations thereof. Looking for a torturous fun way to get outside and get your body moving? Then why not sign up for one or more of the following events? Remember – if it doesn’t kill you, it will make you stronger…
April 28, 2007 – Hill Country Ride for AIDS – take a ride through the back roads of the gorgeous Texas Hill Country during peak wildflower season on this fully-supported bike ride that raises funds for ten local beneficiary organizations that provide life-saving services to the many folks in central Texas who are living with HIV/AIDS.
May 5, 2007 – Shiner G.A.S.P. (formerly known as the Shiner B.A.S.H.) - sure, you could walk (or drive) to the corner store and buy a six-pack of Shiner beer for about five bucks, but just think of how much more satisfying would it be earn your suds by riding your bike 85 miles to where the stuff is brewed?
May 5, 2007 – Rogue Open Water Swim – We know you spend a lot of time at Barton Springs, but how about actually doing some swimming for a change? Test your endurance with an open water lake swim near Mansfield Dam in this Rogue-sponsored event.
May 6, 2007 – The Maze Trail Race – 10K or 30K – this is the first in a series of three trail races sponsored by Rogue. We ran this one last year and can testify that it ain’t called the Maze for nothin’. After the first few jogs in the trail, we were totally disoriented and had no idea which way the finish line was, but somehow, after twisting and turning our way through the entirety of Walnut Creek Park for what felt like forever, we made it. These are really fun, low key races and the registration fee includes a sweet tech tee. (Boo cotton. Yeah tech!) Run all 3 and get a special finisher’s tee.
May 12, 2007 – Chuy’s Hot to Trot 5K and Kids’ K – Proceeds from this run benefit the local chapter of Big Brothers and Big Sisters. C’mon people, this is only 3.1 miles. You can do it! And take Junior out for the Kids’ K too. A family that runs together, stays together. Or, um, whatev… just do it.
May 27, 2007 – Capital of Texas Triathlon – Forget the traditional BBQ; why not bust out and try something new this year by spending your Memorial Day weekend swimming in the brisk (dogshit laden) waters of Town Lake, followed by an invigorating bike ride and run through downtown A-town. Go for the Olympic distance or make it quick and speedy with the sprint. Either way we strongly advise, based on our own PTSD-inducing experience, that you, ahem, be sure to “powder your nose” before the transition area closes so you aren’t forced to stand in a port-a-potty with bare feet. Seriously. Eww.
