This Week in Theatre: Blindfolded Cricket

davidplay7f1_lowres.jpgYou may not know this, but here at the Austinist theatre desk, we work our little fingers to the bone every weekend looking up all the fabulous theatre our fair city has to offer, compiling it into a list, and forwarding it to Austinist's esteemed editor for compilation into the Ist Lists. Sometimes our work is kinda cinchy...say, 15 lines or so. But other times it's a beast. Take this week, for example. This week our list was 60 lines long. For 21 shows. That's 60 individual performances for 21 different productions playing in Austin this week.

This is our way of saying that the Pick of the Week was a tough call. So much to choose from! So we closed our eyes, said a few ohms, and settled on what's sure to be an outstanding production: Wireless-Less. This weekend only. Read our review...and our reader comments. It's no wonder this is a good show, with theatre superstars Lee Eddy and Jason Newman at the helm. We're madly in love with the work of both of these fine actors. (We like to think we got in on 'em early, too, since we saw one of Eddy's very first Frontera Fest performances years ago, and we caught Newman at the MMNT back when he was still a St. Ed's student. We're so cool.) So run, don't walk, to the Blue Theater this Th/Fr/Sa if you want to see this rave-worthy new work, playing as part of Refraction Arts' Fuse Box Festival.

Of course, there are a few other shows that caught our eye. We can't help but laugh and point at Kafka's Dick. Any play that features Undead Kafka, Undead Best Friend of Kafka, and Undead Papa of Kafka has got to be a winner. Just a few snippets of this play's clever dialog have us convinced that it's a damn funny work. Two more weekends remain, at play! Theatre.

Last but not least we suggest you take a gander at Ohio Trip, and not just because they gave us a boatload of tickets to blow out to you, our beloved readers. No, it's more that the preview slides on the show's website really intrigue us. Such strange creatures and weird settings. Hm! We can't help but think that a clever narrative of these fantastical images would make for a unique and fun night at the theatre. Plus we've heard a completely unfounded rumor that the performances might include a buffet. Food and a slide show? (Damn those unfounded rumors. They never turn out to be true.) Awesome. This weekend only at UT's Creative Research Lab, and also a part of Fuse Box.

Of the weekend's theatre glut, there are many more shows that're well worth your time. Take a look at this week's Ist List for details.

I join the Austinist Editors in recommending "Ohio Trip". I was laughing so hard when I saw it at Women and Their Work,I had to wipe away tears of joy at several points to see. But it is not fluff or schtick by any means; it also has biting social commentary. Elizabeth Cobbe is an amazing talent, and her production team is first rate.
