SafePlace has its annual walk this Saturday. For those unaware, SafePlace is many things. It's a shelter for victims of domestic violence. It also offers counseling for victims of sexual assault. It has as a 24-hour emergency hotline.
Beyond these wonderful services, SafePlace also has many community outreach programs, including school-based services and community education classes to prevent violence and promote safe and healthy relationships. Why is this so important? Well, according to their website, "In Texas during 2005, there were 187,811 domestic violence incidents reported and 143 women were killed by their intimate partner. More than 330,000 rapes occur each year in Texas--over 226,000 children and 104,000 adults." There's a lot of work to be done and we could all stand to contribute.
If you would like to be part of the walk and support SafePlace in its efforts to do something about domestic violence, visit the Safeplace website to register. If you can't make the walk, donations are welcome.
