The Laurie Show

There are some weekends when I can actually take a breather. This weekend is not one of them.
No, kids. There's just too much going on that's inspiring this week's edition of The Laurie Show on KUT 90.5. Make plans to catch at least a couple of the following gigs going on tonight and/or tomorrow, including some great CD release parties and some benefit shows that need your support.
Let's begin with tonight's whirlwind of events:
One benefit show happening this evening is Ashera-Blare-A IV at Club DeVille on Red River for the Ashera Project, which provides comprehensive teen pregnancy prevention and youth development programs for high school students. On the bill for the show is All In the Golden Afternoon, The Heirs, The Minderchucks, and The Otters. Courtney Hans of The Heirs is one of Ashera's organizers who worked very hard to get the show together. Kudos to her for a great job. You can visit the Ashera Project website for more information and donation options. UPDATE: The Ashera-Blare-A benefit has been postponed to next Friday.
Another benefit will be for Austin musician Billy Steve Korpi, guitarist for bands Victims of Leisure, the Bloody Tears, and the Crack Pipes. Korpi was recently diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia and is undergoing chemotherapy as part of his treatment, but he has no insurance. His friends have organized two shows at Beerland to help him out, both of which have great line-ups. Tonight, catch Brothers & Sisters, Manikin, and Oh Beast!. The benefit continues tomorrow at Beerland, when the Ugly Beats will celebrate their latest CD release, with Alright Tonight and Nagel joining in the fun. Help a brother out, peeps. Donations can be made through PayPal to leukorpia@hotmail.com.
Also tonight: Peel is having an early CD release party at the Beauty Bar, with friends For Those Who Know and 'Til We're Blue Or Destroy. One of my personal favorites, singer Karrie Hopper, is having a show at the Mohawk, with Real Live Tigers, Kelly Shay Hicks, and Secret Slideshow on the bill. Dynah will be playing at the Parish for The Wartime Social's CD release party, featuring Avenue For Affair, and a solo performance by Casey McPherson. At Emo's Lounge, iKiLLCaRS is opening the show for headliners Die!Die!Die!, along with Camp X-Ray and Watching the Moon. Run over to Headhunters to catch you some rawk with Amplified Heat. Out at the Continental Club on South Congress, The Glass Family will share the stage with Loxsly and White Denim. It's a busy night, people. Schedule accordingly, and take an umbrella just in case.
Can't do anything about the expected windy conditions tomorrow, but that shouldn't keep you from some more great music performances. Take, for example, one hell of a power double bill at Hole In the Wall, featuring the IV Thieves and Young Heart Attack. Fantastic. And a personal message to YHA: I'm surely glad to have you back. Jennifer Stephens, sing it, girl.
More action at Emo's tomorrow with performances by The Weird Weeds and Mark David Ashworth on the inside stage; the lounge will have The Boxing Lesson, White Denim, The Simple Pleasure, and Tsar Bomba on the bill. Dig it.
Okay. My brain hurts. But you know what to do. Keep it on KUT 90.5 tonight, 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. You can listen in your car when you're running around between gigs. Enjoy and don't behave.
And, as our pal RoboCop says, thank you for your cooperation.
