A. I. S. D. Items of Note

guerreropk.jpgWe read in the paper this morning that Austin I.S.D. is hoping to team up with the city and the Long Center to house a performing arts center for students. The school district might be able to use the Topfer Theatre, part of the Long Center plan that had been on hold for lack of funding. Currently Austin ISD has to rent venues, such as Bass Concert Hall, for district events since the school district doesn't own a center large enough for all-district musical performances.

The school district is also considering the possibility of opening an all-boys school, comparable to the Ann Richards School for girls (officially kicking off Fall 2007). AISD is hoping to focus the school on college preparation and leadership, and the district is looking at comparable programs being used in other cities such as Chicago. Superintendent Pat Forgione will be setting up a task force soon to discuss possible locations for the school, funding and other issues having to do with the formation of an all-boys school.
