The Laurie Show

Sorry for all the confusion, kids! Once again, The Laurie Show on KUT 90.5 FM will have to survive without me this week. Instead, I'll be sitting in for Jeff McCord on Left of the Dial, from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., then Chris Hillen will take over the late hours for me. I promise - promise I'll be back to my usual time next week. Please give a listen whilst you're out and about tonight. Thanks to Jeff for letting me sit in for him this evening. He deserves some relaxation time!
I gotta admit, I'm a tad off this Friday myself, moving in slow motion probably because it's been another fast-paced week filled with lots of groovy things happening at KUT. Expect another episode of Before the Break next week, featuring the lovely and talented Rachel Goldstar. And very soon you can hear me hosting a great program on KUT2, KUT's HD station, called Radio Without Borders. The wonderful Teresa Ferguson and Jay Trachtenberg are helping me make a smooth transition into this program, which highlights some of the best music performances featured in Studio 1A at KUT. Check it.
Let's see...here's a quick checklist for you tonight: A nice early show, 6:30 p.m. to about 9 p.m., at Central Market at 40th and N. Lamar with my favorite pranksters, the White Ghost Shivers (yes, I fell for their "last performance" declaration made on April 1st, go figure...); later tonight, it's Peel, Fire vs. Extinguisher, Treasure Mammal and Panda 84 at Beerland - and get there at about 8 p.m., to catch Mr. Lewis and the Funeral Five; there's The Paper South and Xcella over at Hole in the Wall; Cry Blood Apache takes the stage at Elysium with Houston band plid (lower-case "P," thank you); and Crawling With Kings and The Gardes will be in Emo's Lounge, with DJ sets in between by Stay Gold.
Don't forget Ghost of the Russian Empire, Horse + Donkey, and Bayta Darrell at the Mohawk tonight. For some heavier stuff this evening, step into Emo's main stage area for Fu Manchu and Valiant Thorr. Yes. You heard me. Raawwk.
Tomorrow, check out some instore performances at End of An Ear on S. 1st St. by Times New Viking and Love of Diagrams, starting at around 2 p.m. Back at the Mohawk later in the evening, it's The Lemurs, Low Line Caller, Black Before Red and Bello Regazo.
At the Emo's Yo La Tengo Afterparty, Tammany Hall Machine will give away copies of their latest album, Amateur Saw, to peeps with a UT student ID. The reason? It's their very nice way of saying a big thank you to fans and supporters for Tammany being named 10th Best Rock Band and 9th Best Indie Band in the Austin Chronicle's last music poll.
“Everyone in the band was once a student, and we remember what it was like to eat Ramen three meals a day, so we wanted to do something to make it easier for students to get our music,” says Tammany front man Joel Mullins. Hello. Can I get a witness?
This same show will be Golden Bear's CD release party for their latest album, To the Farthest Star. Lalaland and Corto Maltese will get the ball rolling.
The day is speeding by, kids. I've got to hurry up! Remember the temporary change of plans: Listen for me on Left of the Dial tonight, 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., then Chris Hillen will once again take the helm during my usual Friday night boogaloo time slot, 11 p.m. to 3 a.m., on KUT 90.5. Be there, or be hexagon.
And, as our pal RoboCop is often heard to say, thank you for your cooperation.
