Welcome, welcome, the return of This Week in Theatre, our weekly attempt to point you, dear reader, in the direction of some of Austin's best and brightest theatre offerings. Pickings are a touch slim this week, probably due to the spring holiday, but here are a few things that caught our eye.
First, the Bard-lovin' thesps at Austin Shakespeare Fest have ganged up with none other than Richard Garriott to bring you an Easter Revel. This weekend only, you can attend a revival of ASF's lauded production of As You Like It, this time around staged at Garriott's Globe Theatre reproduction, The Curtain. We happen to know a few folks who managed to catch As You Like It in its very short run at the Zilker Hillside Theater last fall, and by all accounts it was a production not to be missed. Which was a shame because way too many people, ourselves included, did just that. This weekend we have a chance to right that wrong. Friday is a preview performance; Saturday includes a pre-show silent auction benefiting ASF; and Sunday features a full-on Ren Faire, with an Easter Egg hunt, a sword fighting demonstration, and more. How much more could you possibly pack into an Easter weekend? Sounds like a blast, and it easily makes our Pick of the Week.
Next up, we thought we'd mention...again...that Plays Well With Others has been held over at Zach. This show is a true Austin original. Plus Owen Egerton is a cutie was always our favorite Sinus head. The man will stop at nothing to commit high comedy. Check it out this Friday or Saturday, while you still can.
Last but not least, we want to draw your attention to the closing weekend (Thursday-Saturday) of My Child, My Child, My Alien Child at Hyde Park Theatre. Zell Miller III never ceases to amaze us with his writing and performing talent; we've raved about his work for awhile now. It's smart, and touching, and damn funny, too. Alien Child is his latest one-man show; this time he takes on parenthood. It makes us chuckle just thinking of what-all he might have to say. Expect this show to get critical nods right and left.
