Apparently dance floor purists are winning the battle against rock and roll, and Stockholm's The Field are leading the march. On an album Pitchfork calls a "safe bet" for "2007's most luxuriant record", sole member Alex Willner utilizes elements of trance, electronica and drum and bass to produce an album that definitely pushes the boundary that other indie disco groups only flirt with. The success that bands like Hot Chip, Battles and Studio (rightfully) enjoy thanks to 80s nostalgia and the guitar hero's secret thirst for something he can move to is clearly something all-together different from what we hear here. This is music to sweat to, and that's just fine with us. Just don't spend money on glow sticks, find them on the floor in the Beauty Bar bathroom while everyone else is doing coke.

Leave the dance revolution starting in Stockholm and scootch over to Glasgow, where shoegazing professionals The Twilight Sad are following the seemingly European-based concept of indie rock arena bands. Fourteen Autumns is their debut full-length, and despite their questionable choice of graphic design, the band is setting a respectable precedent for their genre in a hustle-bustle world of instant gratification and flying cheeseburgers. Although the recipe for this kind of thing might only rival popular post-rock in terms of predictability, there is something to be said for doing it well, and they certainly do. Wall of noise notwithstanding, accented vocals (gotta love that), piano additions, hints of ambience and a cacophony of guitar effects make the album compelling and worthwhile amidst a sea of slowdiving valentines.

You know how British music writers are the Catherine Criers of their community? Everything is mouth-frothingly exciting, every band is single-handedly burrowing their way into the hearts and minds of a planet, and everyone's talent is unfathomable? Well, sometimes they're closer to right than wrong. Although you're probably just about sick of everyone being the next Billy Bragg or breaking boundaries of folk music by dabbling in politics, Duckworth has certainly confirmed a legitimate foxhole in the field of up-and-comers, selling out 2,000 seat venues and earned three UK Top 50 singles.
