About half of the land around Rainey Street near downtown is up for sale by Perry Lorenz, Robert Knight and the Knight Real Estate Corp. The area is already home to the Milago condos. The MACC and the Shore are under construction. Construction of the Legacy Apartments is expected to start soon. Despite that, except for one modern interloper, Rainey Street between Driskill Street and River Street probably has the best collection of unaltered bungalows left in Austin. Click here or the pic above for a slideshow of a piece of Austin that may not be around for long. The area is a National Historic District, but none of the individual houses are landmarked, so the Landmarks Commission must approve demolition of each house.

That neighborhood is a wreck now. All the roads are torn up from the various large scale construction projects; the narrow streets are congested with downtown workers in search of free street parking. Which is a shame, because some residents have been doing a lot to try to improve their neighborhood; now it looks like they'll get bought out for more condos soon.
Save the Chain Drive!
I've got a great idea! Let's tear all these people's houses down and build overpriced condos for yuppies!
The picture of that tree at the end of the slideshow is hot.
I hope they save that tree.
