Austin Boutiques: Episode Three

Although we’ll miss Slinky Whistle Bait, Pallenberg (occupying the former boutique’s tiny Northloop location) is a pretty rad replacement. Pallenberg is different from Austin’s other vintage shops because it specifically sells wearable, not-so-dressy vintage for both men and women. If you like the fashion vibe of Janis Joplin and Kris Kristofferson, this place is for you. Find billowy cotton tops, polyester jumper dresses, cowboy boots and American Indian meets Easy Rider jewelry. (207 East 53rd; 12-7 daily)

We were a little scared to go into Purse-onality, judging the place on its location and rickety exteriors. Luckily, what’s inside the shop is awesome. Our friend found a Lacoste cardigan for $5 after bargaining (the owner says she’ll trade items, too). Like the name implies, there are tons and tons of purses – ranging from architectural clutches to leather tooled shoulder bags. The shop sells both vintage and new belts, boots and kitchen knick-knacks sprinkled in with a few tops for women and pearl snaps for men. (1600 Fortview, 12:30-6 p.m. Tuesday – Friday, 10 – 6 Saturday)
Oh By George, why do you taunt us with your fabulous fashion? The 30 year-old business sold its Guadalupe location a few months ago and opened a new boutique on South Congress, right next to Cissis Market. The boutique is much smaller than the Lamar location and carries comparatively more affordable dresses for women, along with a few tops and jeans (oh, try on some stirrup pants!). A few standouts here include the witty John Varvatos for Converse collection, Tracy Reese’s Plenty dresses, and Trovata’s preppy-casual tops. (1400 South Congress; 11 – 8 Monday – Saturday, 12 – 6 Sunday)
