In the wee hours of Wednesday morning, a woman was pulled over for failing to signal at a turn on Loyola Lane. A deputy noticed a joint in her hand while he was talking to her. He handcuffed her and put her in the back of his car while he talked to her passengers.
As the deputy was chatting with them, the woman found a way to get to the steering wheel, and, still handcuffed, sped off in the deputy's car with sirens loud and lights blazing. She was tracked driving around 130 miles an hour, ultimately crashing the car into a fence in front of a Northeast Austin apartment complex. Austin police dogs discovered the driver about 150 feet away from the crashed car, still handcuffed (and buzzed, we infer).
She could face up to 20 years in prison for this escapade; if she'd just remained in the car, the Travis County Sheriff says, "she would've gotten off with a fine, or a Class C misdemeanor." As for the deputy, well, it seems he may be facing more training.
