Salvage Vangard Breaks Ground on New 9,600-Square-Foot Digs

Nearly a year ago, Austin theatre company Salvage Vanguard made the fabulous announcement that they were finally settling down after twelve years of wandering about town, and committing to a single performance space. That new space, on 2308 Manor Road and within spitting distance of the Vortex and the El Gringo/Chile/Chilito goodness, would eventually contain a 100-seat performance space, offices, a rehearsal studio, and a dozen smaller studios to be used by fellow theatre groups.

Now, after months of fundraising, Salvage Vanguard officially broke ground yesterday, beginning the first phase of their massive construction efforts: completion of the main theater space, scene shop, dressing rooms, and public restrooms.

“We’ve been talking about this pretty much since the company was founded,” says Salvage Vanguard Theater’s Artistic Director Jason Neulander. “Now, thanks to incredible support from a wide variety of sources, we’re able to make that dream a reality.”

Thanks to The Meadows Foundation's recent $70,000 award, plus funds from various and sundry community groups and corporations, Salvage Vanguard has managed to raise over sixty percent of its $500,000 target.

Phase one is scheduled to be completed by the June 1st opening date of SVT's production of Mud by Cuban-American playwright Maria Irene Fornes.
