Sure, think about the Texas Hill Country Wine and Food Festival and the Sunday Fair in Georgetown is the first thing to come to mind. One of our favorite events, though, is this Saturday from 10am-1pm - then outdoor farmers’ market-inspired tasting event - From Texas Farm to Texas Table at the Austin Farmers’ Market, downtown at 4th & Guadalupe.
“Not only do farmers’ markets support organic and locally grown foods, but help protect the health and viability of a community on several fronts including assistance in education and promotion of a healthy population, using less energy to produce and transport food, but also keeping valuable farmland in production, thus creating and preserving a diversity of environments surrounding a city," said Festival board member Susan Cashin. "And of course, most of all a strong healthy farmers' market creates not only a sense of place and community, but a bridge between city and farm."
Local and guest chefs will pair up with regional farmers, cheese makers, and sustainable meat purveyors to create tasty dishes showcasing the freshest of Texas’ bounty. Austin chefs Mark Paul of Wink, Terry Conlan of Lake Austin Spa, Lou Lambert of Lambert’s Barbeque, Will Packwood of Cibo and Mark Chapman of the Driskill Grill will be on hand to showcase their approach to Texas' freshest products. Guest chef and author John Ash will also be on hand to celebrate the re-issue of his groundbreaking book - From the Earth to the Table - and former managing editor of Organic Gardening, author of 17 books on food, wine and gardening and host of two television series Jeff Cox will odiscuss selecting and cooking the best ingredients on the market as he imparts in his new book The Organic Cook’s Bible.
Come out Saturday to experience featured Texas products, including Farmer Russell’s Piedmontese Beef, Angel Valley Farm (organic), Animal Farm (organic), Bella Verdi Farms, Bikkurim Farm, Boggy Creek Farm (organic), Kitchen Pride Mushrooms, Cocoa Pure Kakawa Cocoa Beans, Peach Creek Farms and Texas Specialty Cut Flowers/Arnosky Family Farms.
Texas estate-bottle wineries will be pouring and talking about taking their products, including Bell Mountain, Pheasant Ridge, Stone House Vineyard, Spicewood Vineyards, Flat Creek Estate and Torre di Pietra.
"Pairing the event with our downtown market will be a new venture that we are really excited about," said Director Suzanne Santos. “The connection to a local food and its markets becomes more powerful when people can actually experience it. The co-existence of the farmers’ market with the Texas Farm to Texas Table event will bring awareness to the festival goers of the delights and advantages of buying locally grown food."
