Hey Austin, Jen from Gothamist here again. Your mayor is pretty cool:

That was his speech from our show on Wednesday. No sports! More rock! Yay!

"But, Mr. Mayor, aren't Charles Attal and Lewis Black the de facto bloated sports owners in this town?"

No doubt. Wanna know why we pay $30 to see shows that cost $15 in other cities? See above for reasons #1 and #2.

  • Stew

No matter how much money SXSW brings in in tax revenue, it is not the place of the city to provide them with corporate welfare.

  • Grape Ape

Austin isn't a place for a pro sports team. Besides, the arena/stadium would be located in Round Rock or Georgetown anyway - close to the people who would actually attend the games.

But, Mr. Mayor, aren't Charles Attal and Lewis Black the de facto bloated sports owners in this town?

  • Jesus... SXSW brings the city millions and millions in annual revenue. The least the city can do is support this festival for all it does to promote Austin and its economy. And how is waiving fees using up your tax dollars? And volunteering to get a badge makes you a zombie? Go suck an egg.

  • Pissed off taxpayer!

Well, the only thing I can add to Mayor Wynn little speech is he and the city council WAIVED $90,000.00 in city fees to the FOR PROFIT company SXSW!!! Stop using my taxes for these bullshit money grubbing assholes! Make SXSW pay for the use of the city services that MOST other business are required to pay! Waived city fees are suppose to be for charitable events and honorable days like Martin Luther King and Veteran's Day parades and such! If you and the city council want some FREE BADGES from SXSW then go VOLUNTEER!!! LIKE ALL THE OTHER ZOMBIES DO!!!

I've had the privilege of meeting Mr.Wynn several times and I've come to know several of his work very well.

I think he is the right man for our city right now. People see his name is Will Wynn and they assume he's another blowhard politician, but he's not. He started in real estate, worked with the downtown austin alliance and realized how the city wans't cultivating some of its best resources. He is one of the most modest politicians I've met and he allows the city's culture strengths to become its economic strengths. Having a mayor who understands growth, property and what makes a city livable rather than understanding politics, manipulation and what people want to hear is AWESOME. I think we will look back on this time as a golden period in Austin.

Plus I'm in love with him :)

Will Wynn cool? Are you kidding? I hope you're kidding. He's about as square as a... square. The only reason he even won is because his name was "Will Win".

  • JUBCHA

WHAT A COOL CAT. KEEP OUT THE SPORTS TEAMS. I MEAN, I DIDN'T PAY ANY TAXES LAST YEAR BECAUSE I WAS OUT OF WORK, BUT DO YOU REALLY WANT TO PUT MONEY INTO A BIG SPORTS STADIUM?

  • lk

haha i see my boyfriend and i laughing in the crowd. pretty cool to see a mayor come out like that.

  • Ching

Cool speech, but would a professional sports franchise really hurt Austin that much? I'm all about rock and roll and I support our music scene, but a baseball team in Austin would only mean positive things.

  • Wes

I know that you meant it as a compliment, but our current mayor is a moron. Bring back Kirk Watson!

  • Stew

    speak for yourself

  • sandra ramos

And Teitur even mentioned during his set what a cool Mayor we had...
