As SXSW grows into an ever larger behemoth, touring acts have been increasingly drawn to its critical mass like pop matter into an indie black hole. Now it's not uncommon for the parties and music to begin well into the film and interactive festivals. This Saturday was good evidence of this trend, with parties like Local Music is Sexy (Full disclosure: Yes, it was an Austinist sponsored event) and bands like Snow Patrol, who delivered a high energy, high production set to kick off the pre-music weekend.
Schlepping two full semis full of gear and three full-size tour buses, along with openers OK Go and Silversun Pickups, the night was ablaze with light, smoke machines, and shimmering pop melodies. Silversun Pickups, quickly gaining more and more momentum off their debut album, Carnavas, tended towards melodrama, which fit quite well on a bill with Snow Patrol. Ok Go, a frequent visitor to Austin, delivered their usual high energy set of power pop, this time with the addition of Tim, a jump roper that the band apparently met that day. Seeing as the stage at Stubb's has little room to accommodate a few full size treadmills, it was the next best thing; he received a rousing cheer for his many aerobatic moves.

Headliners Snow Patrol cranked up the fog machines and took the stage to rowdy applause from the sold out audience. The massive array of robotic lights and strobes came to life, and so did the stage, with lead singer Gary Lightbody living up to his position as frontman for a world famous pop band. The sometimes over-the-top (bordering on saccharine) songs were held together nicely by the musicianship and sound delivered by a band that routinely sells out major European arenas.
