A Very Special Romp: Jonathan Meiburg, Neal Pollack & Black Before Red

On Sunday afternoon, Austin Rock N Romp and Book People are sponsoring an all-ages event on the patio at Mohawk featuring Neal Pollack and Shearwater's Jonathan Meiburg. The show will also feature Black Before Red, amps still warm from their Local Music is Sexy 3 performance the night before.

Rock N Romp has been putting on all ages rock shows since last summer, and in the coming months will be moving their events to Lone Star School of Music in east Austin, providing outdoor shows for the fair weather months. In anticipation of a big upcoming year, they've joined forces with Alternadad's Pollack to throw a big party and celebrate the local music community, their families and their love of all things music.

Meiburg will be playing a solo set along with Shearwater bandmate Thor Harris, and Pollack will be reading from Alternadad and signing books. Black Before Red's usual energetic guitar-pop set will round out the afternoon along with a special RNR dance party for kids on the upper patio.

If you would like to further incorporate cool music into your child’s life, dig up a fantastic new compilation called PLAY from Desoto Records, due next month. One can sample a couple of the tunes here, including Channels precautionary “Always Check For Holes” as well as Georgie James’ “Grizzly Jive” (a strong candidate for a prospective cover by local act Golden Bear.) Young Fresh Fellows provide the outdoor festivities theme on “Picnic” while there’s even some noise courtesy of Mudhoney. Meanwhile, another Austin band Clap! Clap! could arguably incorporate both “Clap Your Hands” (Mary Timony) and “I’ll Never Fear Ghosts Again” (Soccer Team) into their set fairly effortlessly. The dance inducing “Born To Shake” by Anna Oxygen and “Bounccin’ Party” by Ben Davis & the Jetts are some other choice cuts, while Sgt. Major’s “Nellie The Elephant” is a perfect bed time tale.

But for now, roll out of bed at noon and head downtown for the Rock N Romp show, and don't be late, Jonathan Meiburg starts playing at 1:30!
