Austinist Interviews SXSW : Snowden

Share a story about a visit to Austin or a previous trip to SXSW. -

Chandler: I was getting a slice from Hoeks Pizza; they were playing a live Slayer DVD. It was blaring on their speakers. Meanwhile, up the street comes a group of fundamentalist Christians with placards giving details of the upcoming Armageddon. The leader of the group had a megaphone and was preaching all kinds of nonsense. It was the perfect moment ... Satanic speed metal, fundamentalist freaks, and a slice of pepperoni!

Jordan: It was my last day in Austin when I was recording the record. Someone knocked on the door at 7am and said they thought my car had been hit in the night. I walked outside and my car was 15 feet up on the sidewalk, obliterated. That's how our touring van came to be; 'The Snowmobile' we call it.

Corinne: Popping my bottom E string into my hand and having my hand bleed and smear all over my bass. Thank God For Those Who Know were playing with us and let us and let me use their bitchin' little Mustang. Thanks again guys!

How do your parents describe your music to people?

Chandler: I haven't a clue.

Jordan: The same way I describe it to anyone who doesn't have a clue:
"Ever heard of The Cure?"

Corinne:
"rocking roool" music, starving artist music.

Name one record that has influenced you (musically or otherwise) the most.

Chandler
: I'll go with Nowhere by Ride.

Jordan: The Cure - Disintigration

Corinne: Portishead Dummy

Is there an album an ex ruined for you that you'll never be able to reclaim?

Chandler: No way!

Jordan
: You have to have an 'x' first.

Corinne: Definitely Massive Attack's 100th Window

What do you never want to see inside a tortilla?

Chandler:
Anything with legs or antennas.

Jordan: an Adam Sandler movie.

Corinne: Buddha.

BBQ or Tacos?

Chandler: Tacos.

Jordan
: Which one tastes better vegetarian?

Corinne:
BBQ

Margaritas or beer?

Chandler: Frozen Margaritas.

Jordan: Rita's w/ extra Gran Ma

Corinne: Neither. I'm a big fan of the Greyhound.

Parties or distro deal?

Jordan
: Party ... physical CD distro is on it's way out the door anyway.

Chandler: Distro deal, there's plenty of time for parties when I've got the deal.

What's your favorite song to play live?

Chandler: "Black Eyes". It's the most demanding.

Jordan: "Anti Anti"

Corinne: Right now its "Innocent Heathen".

If you could open for any artist living or dead, in any era of their career, who would it be?

Jordan: I'd like to open for Audioslave since they suck and they'd
make us look better than we are.

Chandler: I can't pin it down, probably the Sex Pistols, Siouxsie & the Banshees (early days), or Echo & the Bunnymen (Porcupine/Ocean Rain era).

Are you going to bring your bikes for the quick dashes to other shows?

Jordan:
I wish ... my new bike couldn't handle the northern salt and snow. Last time I took my bike the weather destroyed it.

Chandler: No, and I'm not going to stress. I'm just going to take it easy.

Corinne: We'd love to but will be on the road in the snowy northwest before
we hit SXSW so our bikes would get shitted on. But we are a bike friendly bunch.

What album of 2006 can you not leave at home? All time?

Jordan: Beach House

Chandler: Nothing completely blew me away last year. All time; Broadcast Haha Sound.

Corinne: Peter Bjorn and John. Almost all the time…

What music are you looking forward to in 2007? At SXSW specifically?

Chandler: Deerhunter, Peter Bjorn & John, & anything new.

Dave: Beach House

Is it still fun to play live if the audience is 95% industry?

Chandler: Sure. Just ignore them, or pretend they are normal civilians. It's still fun.

Corinne: I'm excited to play in front of anyone. I don't really think about that sort of thing.

Snowden will be performing at the Jade Tree Records Showcase
