As so many make the great migration to the gem of the Lone Star State to experience one of the most dense concentrations of beer, barbeque and amps, The Narrator make their jaunt south from Chicago, ready to play but more ready to have fun. Their album All That To The Wall comes out May 15th on Flameshovel Records.
Is SXSW fun or business?
I’ll say it’s business, but we’re going for fun. I’m gonna try not to think about that stuff too much, and just be drunk for most of it and have a good time.
If you could open for any artist living or dead, in any era of their career, who would it be?
Man, that’s a good question. Right now I’d say Bob Dylan 65-66. But a lot of people didn’t even like his new stuff then, so they DEFINITELY wouldn’t like ours. It’d also be funny because we cover a Dylan song “All the Tired Horses” from 1970, and he’d have that whole Back To The Future/Chuck Berry/this is your cousin Marvin Berry thing and hear a song of his from the near-distant future. Probably freak him out.
What’s your mode of transportation for the week going to be? Tell us about your van, car, caravan, bus or donkey.
We just got a new van that’s from 1990. I’m keeping my fingers crossed. Right now the driver’s side window is stuck closed, so tollbooths are gonna be awkward.
What album of 2006 can you not leave at home? All time?
2006, huh? Oxford Collapse, The End of the World, Low Skies, Bound Stems, Califone. I can handle leaving them at home for a week, though. The other guys bring their iPods. I bring some tapes.
Who are you most excited to see play at SXSW?
To be honest, no one in particular. I think we’re taking the money instead of the badges, so I’ll just go to some parties, see some friends play. We’ll probably be too busy having sex and doing drugs, anyway.
Pitchfork: Do you even read it?
Sometimes. I don’t know if that question is supposed to imply that it’s an inferior music website, or something. I don’t know. I try not to read too much on the internet.
Any previous trips to Austin? Betcha something fun happened-share it please.
The only other time we played SXSW was in 2004. I think we were only there for a day or so. Kind of a blur. I remember scamming our way in to someone’s hotel and swimming in the rooftop(?) pool. And getting the ugliest clothing in existence at some free give-away thing. I wish I could remember the name of the company. So ugly.
It’s all about ’07. This is our year. I can feel it in our bones.
The Narrator plays SXSW at Soho Lounge on Friday, March 16 at 10pm.
