Austin Tennis Club to Donate Tournament Proceeds to Out Youth
The Austin Tennis Club (ATC) will be hosting its Fifth Annual Heart of Texas Classic—or HOT5—this weekend, March 10-12 at UT Intramural Courts and the South Austin Tennis Center. This year, the organization has designated Out Youth as their charity of choice.
Out Youth, long a staple in the Austin lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) community, is the only organization for LGBTQ youth ages 12-19 in Central Texas. Out Youth services include counseling, leadership development, support groups, community outreach, and social events. ATC, which promotes “tennis and social activities among the Austin-area gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community,” has traditionally donated proceeds from their annual tournament to local LGBT organizations. Last year's proceeds went to AIDS Services of Austin. According to Co-Tournament Director, Scott Crews, ATC saw that Out Youth had a need and that it was an excellent organization to sponsor this year.
Of particular interest this year is the participation of an Out Youth member and his father in the ATC tournament. The father attributes Out Youth with helping their family learn and educate themselves about their queer son. In addition, this tournament features competitive tennis playing with entrants from over 20 states as well as international competitors. The semifinals and finals will take place on Monday at the South Austin Tennis Center. Games are free and open to the public.
ATC will also be hosting a drawing party at RAIN on Friday from 7pm-10pm, as well as a banquet on Sunday evening. Both events are open to the public. Tickets for the banquet will be available at the Draw Party.
This weekend, support Austin's LGBTQ youth watching tennis! Don’t forget daylight savings time!
