Whatever. Fitzgerald was brought in to ivestigate the alleged leaking of Plame's identity - specifically if the identity protection act had been violated. In 3.5 years, he could find no such crime had been committed. So he went chasing after another crime, any crime. Pro-Wal Mart

Why? Because, the media organizations confidently asserted, no crime had been committed." He continues... "As the media alleged to the judges (in Footnote 7, page 8, of their brief), Plame's identity as an undercover CIA officer was first disclosed to Russia in the mid-1990s by a spy in Moscow. Of course, the press and its attorneys were smart enough not to argue that such a disclosure would trigger the defense prescribed in Section 422 because it was evidently made by a foreign-intelligence operative, not by a U.S. agency as the statute literally requires." So perhaps she had, at one time, been covert. However, that status had been compromised for years, and she was definitely not covert when Novak published his column. Says who? The Washington Post, ABC, NBC, CBS, etc., etc.

Here's one for you... At the same time their reporters were claiming that Plame was "covert", news organizations like the Washington Post, etc. were going to court and saying that Plame was not covert in an effort to keep said reporters from having to testify under oath. And another... If she was "covert", how come after three and a half years of investigating, Fitzergerald could not show that she was? Pro-Wal Mart
