Austin's Kevlar commandos were called out yesterday after six patients at Oaks Treatment Center, a South Austin residential facility offering "innovative treatment" for troubled adolescents, staged an attempted coup.
The staff of the 118-bed facility, unable to contain the situation after the fighting intensified, locked themselves inside an office and dialed emergency dispatchers.
"They were upset and that's why they took to secure themselves inside an office to make sure they weren't harmed," said Detective James Mason to News8Austin. "They felt it was an escalating situation and they did what they felt was right to protect themselves."
Austin SWAT managed to quell the insurgency after gaining access to the facility through a back door. Ten people were later detained; six of them now face felony criminal charges.
