Once again, yours truly is rushing to slide in this Austinist column of mine before The Laurie Show hits the airwaves later tonight on KUT 90.5. It's been a hell of a week, kids. In between completing new episodes of Before the Break, inviting The Lovely Sparrows to perform in KUT's famous Studio 1A for a performance taping for Radio Without Borders, and filling in for the weekday afternoon host with the most, Bob Branson, there hasn't really been a chance for me to...oh...breathe. You know. Sleep. The usual.
It doesn't look as though the weekend is going to show any mercy, either. I'm planning to take in some great music before I settle down with friends Sunday night for food, drink, and hardcore mockery of everything and anything that is the Academy Awards.
Admit it. You know you shout at the TV. You marvel at the outfits and wonder why some people are wearing that hideous thing, and do your own version of Mystery Science Theater 3000 by making snide remarks during the long, pointless thank you speeches and self-congratulatory pats-on-the-backs.
But first...the music out and about town, before I go on a rant about why the Oscars should only be alloted 29 minutes.
I absolutely love it when Emo's has a ton of stuff going at once on all three stages, and it's not necessarily music from one genre. Tonight, aside from the action in the Emo's Lounge, there's great music on the inside stage with The Boxing Lesson, Red Leaves, Lalaland, and Prom Nite. On the outside stage, it's - well, I'm compelled to ask you: Have you ever had your very inner foundations rocked to the core while your ears swelled and then exploded? That would be the doings of The Sword, in my humble opinion. Enjoy all that Emo's has to offer.
The Parish is presenting a triple bill that makes my heart and my eyelashes flutter: Midlake, Tacks the Boy Disaster, and St. Vincent (featuring the sweet vocalizations of Annie Clark) are all playing there this evening. Another one of my all-time faves, Maneja Beto, takes to the Flamingo Cantina stage tonight. And down Red River at The Mohawk, you'll find She,Sir, Divided Like A Saint's, and Hotel, Hotel. Make the rounds, people.
Tomorrow, more grooviness from groovy bands at Hole In the Wall one of my favorite places to hang out and enjoy music. Saturday's line-up includes The Ugly Beats, The Personals, Cassette, and Low Expectations.
On Sunday, if avoiding the Academy Awards is your deal, I don't blame you. I'd like to recommend catching an early show at Emo's with Dynah. They're in a line-up that features The Canvas Waiting, Between the Trees, Brooks Chambers, and Hundred Year Storm. The doors open at 7 p.m., and the music should effectively shield you from the Oscar acceptance speeches.
Okay. I'll behave. For now. But remember, we have a date tonight: 11 p.m. to 3 a.m., on KUT 90.5 FM. You just might hear my own twisted version of an Oscar speech. In the words of RoboCop, thank you for your cooperation.

once again, I made an error. maneja beto played with the laughing, the interest kills and white denim at the compound last night. my bad. but I appreciate everyone keeping me posted.
