Extreme Makeover Austin Home Edition

xtremeaustinhome.jpgWhile this writer may be of mixed minds about the show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition on ABC, it is worth noting that this Sunday night the show will focus on the construction of a home in Austin. Ty Pennington and crew worked on the house in Northwest Austin in December. The Austin family benefited is currently the only family in the nation with five biological children with autism. The episode will feature an appearance by Trace "Honky Tonk Badonkadonk" Adkins, who sang in an event to raise money to pay off the Austin family's mortgage.

It's sure to be hokey an emotional show. We wonder if it will feature the usual "Texas" requisites, like one of the crew-members buying a cowboy hat at Cavenders or Sheplers ... please prove us wrong, ABC.

I live down the street from this house and the only thing I can say is that I feel really sorry for the people that live behind them.
This house is more than a Mcmansion it is gigantic. I understand the family needed more space but they could have put the house somewhere else. The house behind them I would venture to guess has a hard time seeing the sun.
I am not saying the family didnt need a larger house or taking away from their situation.
The layout of where this house sits makes the house behind it look like a shed.

Actually my best friend's parents live behind this house and she wrote up the whole experience on her blog. The funniest moment was when her Dad mentioned to the crew--just as they'd brought the house down--that the O'Donnell's had just phoned him because they realized they had left one of the kids behind. Had the crew checked the house before...?

This seems to be so indicative of American excess -- no question that this family can use the assistance, but with so many folks just trying to get by, why go overboard like this? I've never seen the show or the house for that matter, but wouldn't all the effort be more constructive if it were honed in on finding better options for all families with autistic children? But I guess that wouldn't satisfy the ratings and/or product-placement advertisers.
