Austinist Show Preview: Of Montreal At Emo's

1531909565_l.jpg

Of Montreal, unlike what seems to be the case with most great bands recently, is not a group from Montreal. They're from Athens, Georgia, home of the now legendary Elephant Six collective. Along with that distinction comes the obligatory psychedelic noodling and Beatles-in-the-wood-chopper homages, yet they have remained a singular and most impressive voice in the realm of Indie-dom. On their most recent release, Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? lead singer Kevin Barnes has created his Sea Change, or Blue, if you will. Which is to say, the album's subject matter is quite dark, dealing with grown-up emotions like anger and sadness and stuff. It's a keeper, to be sure, something that all of you hyper-literate sadsacks should have stuffed into your ear sockets.

Tonight, at Emo's, the whole group will be on hand to promote the new disc, and show Austin some real class. Past experiences have proved that Barnes and his peeps put on a stunning live performance, and this evening should be no different. Insane Japanese popsters Elekibass will open as well as native Texan DJ Jester the Filipino Fist, less a man than a mash-up machine. Both are sure to set the mood correctly for what is sure to be the most exhaustingly eclectic shows of the year. Come!
