lucinda.jpg Lucinda Williams West (Lost Highway)

West finds (as is apparent just by a brief scan of the track titles) Williams in a thoughtful and tender place musically, as her private life and its rough patches sort of overwhelm her toe-tappin' hay-covered dance floor capabilities. The death of her mother and the end of a relationship both factor into the context of the album, but that doesn't stop big guitars and generous bass drum from creeping into the fold. Though most of the songs are thinly veiled journal entries, the songs don't suffer in any sort of Sad Girl in the Coffee Shop sort of way: it's still our honky tonk queen, and she's still a badass, even if she's down and out.

papercuts.jpg Papercuts Can't Go Back (Gnomonsong)

While there's no shortage of one-room, one-man artists and less and less language to differentiate between them, it's hard to say why Can't Go Back has earned the right to be heard without dropping names. Jason Quever, the man behind the project, is going on tour opening for Grizzly Bear, and while you might not have heard of Gnomonsong before, the team of Devendra Banhart and Andy Cabic that run it hope that you'll learn, because they're oh-so-excited about Quever. In fact, Quever has collaborated with Vetiver and Casiotone for the Painfully Alone as well. The album promises to be a "a marriage of timeless songs, richly textured studio sounds, classic rock/pop hookery, and focused narratives" (-Gnomonsong), let us know if it disappoints.
