It’s the time of year when thoughts might turn to mushy things, like Valentine cards and heart-shaped boxes of candy…and all the money that companies are raking in selling this sort of foofy-ness. My question to you is this: Would you like to know what truly says “love” with a capital L-O-V-E? My humble recommendation is give your sweetheart – and yourself – the gift of music.

Here are some recommendations, courtesy of The Laurie Show on KUT 90.5, that might inspire some romantic ideas…or, maybe just give you and your honey an excuse to go out and celebrate in a less traditional way. Where’s the heart-shaped beer, I ask you?

Perhaps you can start the celebrating and smoochie boochies before February 14 by catching some of the great weekend shows coming up. There’s a hell of a show at Emo’s tomorrow night with The Black Angels, Horse + Donkey, and Brothers and Sisters. Another fantastic show this evening features Black Before Red, Peel, and Operator at the Mohawk on Red River.

Saturday is also chock full of more great music. Midori Umi, the Missing Tapes, Fairchild, and Fattback will play at Hole In the Wall. Or drop into Stubb’s indoor venue for music by Dynah, Household Names, and Southern Backtones.

Did you know that Saturday is prom night at the Beauty Bar? You and your honey bunny can don your tacky matching red threads and hold hands while moving to the sounds provided by Car Stereo (Wars). Hey, mister DJ.

Your preference might be to keep the evening weird on Saturday night. If so, allow me to direct you to Lovejoy’s. They’re going all out for the Make Austin Weirder Fest by keeping the entertainment delightfully bizarro with Hug, Cry Blood Apache, Assacre, Toof, and Zom Zom (now known as Pataphysics). Insanity for all, and beer pints abound. That, to me, says romance, baby.

Even Sunday has a lot in store for you and your love buns. Lots of great music to be had at Beerland with Zookeeper, the Bourbon Legends, Crawling With Kings and Charlie Faye. Or why not try a romantic film? Here’s my preference: My Bloody Valentine (1981) at Alamo Drafthouse South, featuring The Sweethearts live. Awesome! Nothin’ says lovin’ like gore and horror.

Of course, if you prefer going out on a Wednesday, there is no shortage of musical delights to tantalize the heart and ears. My pals the White Ghost Shivers will croon to make you swoon at the newly remodeled Scoot Inn at 1308 East 4th, while Mr. and Mrs. Mays share the bill with Mistress Stephanie & Her Melodic Cat to leave you purring for more at Hole In the Wall. Sssssexy!

I’m rather bummed by the fact that the Tuna Helpers are giving their last performance on this particular night at Room 710, but at least their last hurrah will be a glorious one, complete with burlesque beauties and plenty of chaos to keep you entertained. Check it out.

For those of you who prefer to wear black, snidely say things like “Happy VD” and laugh riotously at the mooney-eyed yokels around you, my hat’s off to you, too. There’s an Anti-Valentine’s Party at Beerland on Wednesday that should do the trick. Hey – don’t glare at me like that. Black hearts and making fun of moronic love birds used to be my own tradition in the past.

I hope this helps you plan your special occasion, should you choose to have one. Meanwhile, I must prepare for tonight’s madness. You know the drill: 11 p.m. to 3 in the frickin’ morning on KUT 90.5 FM. Until next column, remember RoboCop’s line – thank you for your cooperation.

The other stage at Emo's on Saturday features even more excellent local bands - Pong, Golden Arm Trio, Invincible Czars, and Chris Black.
