Snapshots: If You Have To Ask, You'll Never Know

The Foundation

By far, one of the best views of the skyline anywhere in Austin. If you recognize this view, you know what were talking about. This has become one of this city's best kept secrets, tucked away nicely in a Central Austin neighborhood. Enjoy it while it lasts--a view like this, with a city like ours, is likely to not last long.

The tree in the foreground on the left of the pic gives it away. haven't you seen those branches before? when i was growing up i used to go there with my little brother to puff reefers. all the kids from austin high called it strawberry hill. It is CBTA # 44. Watch out for broken glass!

  • Pulleyman

used to be some really good political and just artistic tagging there, but the fuzz likes to wipe it away

  • Summer Anne

tst is totally right, it's west of lamar & 10th in one of the weird empty lots in fancyhood. we used to ahng out there all the time. real pretty.

  • tst

the photo is titled "the foundation". the foundation is a place in that neighborhood behind lamar where everyone used to drink in high school.

  • Butter Woman

I've changed my mind. I think it's House Park.

  • Steve

    Redbud

  • .

Isn't that maybe House park that's all lit up in the middle/ foreground ? I think I can see the diagonals of the seating and some upright posts.

So that makes the location a bit West and north of House park, up on a hill somewhere, over shoal creek ? Maybe somewhere on Enfield or Windsor ?

  • Thomas Paine

I hope I never get lost with any of you people.

  • Citylicious

I think it's too far south to be House Park, but seems pretty close. If it were House Park, the Capitol would be further to the right because it's north of the cap. DEFINITELY not Zilker! This is looking south-ish, Zilker's the wrong way. No matter where it is, I am officially on the hunt.

  • .

my first thought was the zilker clubhouse too

  • Carter

I think it is from the top of the House Park stadium (though the tree branches are a bit confusing)

  • Astngrl

Okay, obviously WEST of downtown, almost due west of the capitol and looking back slightly southward down the length of congress. No clue what the cross street is, but I can definitely get behind the fact that the numbered street is round about 10th, maybe as high as 15th but probably not. Beyond that, I'm clueless.

  • aaron

I would guess the clubhouse as well.

  • josh

that vantage point is from some hill/structure just above Lamar blvd. I say it's from the top of the Einstein's rooftop parking.

  • DJC

yikes, there are definitely some directionally challenged people out there.

  • Butter Woman

Definitely south of the river. Most definitely not Redbud (too far west). Probably not Zilker Clubhouse (still too far west). Possibly the old Treehouse or Elks Lodge.

  • Myackie

I went to a wedding recently at the Zilker Clubhouse. It looks like the view from there.

  • Chris

I drew sightlines in Google Earth through several of the overlapping buildings in the photos. They do indeed converge just east of that castle-looking building up on the hill by Lamar. I have always assumes that is what people mean when they refer to Castle Hill.

I'd link to the photo proof in Flickr but the URL displeases this comment form.

  • hjs

My guess is West 10th St, off Blanco.

  • ttrentham

Apologies for the double comment. Clearly, the commenting system is having issues.

  • dan

I agree with Redbud. I love coming over the top of that hill at night.

  • Grpae Ape

While I couldn't go stand in this specific spot (give or take 50 yards), its quite obvious where it is. Some clues are not as obvious as others. Even something that can not be seen can provide all of the insight you need.

For all of you who said it was taken from the East. I'm not even gonna go there.

  • mdahmus

Agreed it's not south and definitely not east. What about a vantage that seems south but is really almost west -- like the hill on Redbud? Doesn't look the same as I remember but it's been a while.

  • Yes, agreed with ttrentham.

COULD be from what we think is the south but is really west-ish though - like the hill on Redbud Trail? Although I remember that being more of a tilted view than this one, but it's been a while.

  • kenneth

It's on a direct line west of that atrocious county jail annex on W. 11th, so I'll say Castle Hill (Clarksville) as well.

  • ttrentham

What planet are you people from?

There's no way this was taken from the south or the east unless it was photoshopped or something. I'd link a picture taken from Elk's Lodge, but TypeKey isn't working right.

The Capitol is on 11th and is to the left of the frame. The jail is on 9th and in the center of the frame and the Frost Bank building in on 4th and to the right. That all adds up to mean that this was taken from the west of downtown, looking east and must've been taken at roughly 8th or 9th street. The elevation matches the area I'm talking about.

  • ttrentham

Stupid TypeKey isn't working or I'd link a photo from Elk's Lodge.

What planet are you people from? Unless it was photoshopped, there's no way that was taken at Elk's Lodge or from south and east.

The Capitol is on 11th and on the left in the photo with the Frost Bank building to the right. You can see the jail in between at roughly 9th street and in the center of the frame. This has to have been taken from the west of downtown looking east.

  • tron

These are from south of Town Lake and East of Congress, definitely not Clarksville/Baylor/The Castle.

  • asdsad

    elks lodge, dawg

  • Following to the Flickr page gives more clues. Foundation? I'll revise my guess. It's behind one of those houses on Baylor. So...even with the parking garage I was talking about, but farther west. A fried used to rent one of the places back there.

I suppose I'm ruining the secret...

  • hmmmm

    the castle in clarksville?

  • The shot's clearly viewing downtown from the west since the Capitol is to the left (north). My first guess is somewhere along Lamar. The two story parking garage at Wink / Whole Earth Provision perhaps?

  • WhatDoIWin?

    Elk's Lodge?

  • Lambert

    Fantastic photo, by the way.

  • Lambert

    Central Austin?

It looks to be shot from South Austin. (But I could be wrong).
