Want to update your look with some new clothes? Sell or donate your dated wardrobe and check out some of the newest boutiques that have popped up around town:
If you happen to be on the eastside sipping lattes at Progress Coffee, visit neighboring The Royal Family. Inside, messenger bags, geometric watches share space with mopeds. Everything here, from the comfy, canvas slip-on shoes to the soft jersey dresses reflect owner/buyer Lauren Thumlert’s casual-cool style.
(500 San Marcos Street #104, 11-7pm Monday-Saturday, Noon-5pm Sundays) [info]
Go a little farther east on 5th Street past the industrial what’s-going-on-here? area and you’ll find Solid Gold, a hidden treasure right by the train tracks. This small boutique/spa caters to hip sophisticates with cute mix-and-match basics in bold, solid colors (hence the name). Also, look for imported soaps and playful stationary.
(1601 East 5th Street #102, 11-7pm Monday-Saturday, Noon-5pm Sundays) [info]
If you’re craving denim, you must go to the newly expanded Hem Jeans. The denim bar carries over 36 slightly upscale denim lines for men and women, such as People’s Liberation and Yanuk, says co-owner Aimee Lindgren. Visit the boutique’s website to see all of the lines carried.
(908-b West 12th Street, Noon-6pm Mondays, 11-7pm Tuesdays, 10-7pm Wednesday-Saturday, 1-6pm Sundays) [info]
Shiki moved from the original uptown location just a few blocks south. If you’re a ruffles and frills girly-girl, you can get a little bit of everything here. There are racks and racks of body-flattering dresses, tops and jackets in a multitude of color and patterns, and gold 14K jewelry.
(3016 Guadalupe Street #200, Hours are 11-7 Monday through Saturday.) [info]
Never go north of Riverside? Visit the new shops in South Austin. Strut is bigger and better now that it relocated from across the parking lot. Trendy girls on a budget will appreciate the whimsical charm necklaces and washable lines from Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Additional bonus: everything is 40 percent off during First Thursdays.
(2200 South Lamar, 11-7pm Monday-Saturday, Noon-6 Sundays) [info]
Jeff Strange, owner of men’s boutique Upstairs, recently opened Downstairs for both men and women. Here, Strange’s penchant toward the Los Angeles street style (think silk-screened T-shirts and short-billed hats) is still apparent, but the menswear lines here are more refined, he says, including collared shirts and cleaner graphics. Look for one of a kind, organic inspired jewelry made with real turkey feathers!
(2110 South Lamar, 11-7pm Monday-Saturday, 1-5pm Sundays) [info]
If the LA style is not for you, the other end of the spectrum is Mercury Clothing, right next to The Soup Peddler. This unassuming boutique carries upscale menswear lines from New York and Europe, such as Buckler’s White Collar Crime line – reconstructed shirts made from 1940’s Berlin shirts. The shirts don’t come cheap, but you probably won’t be able to find them anywhere else in Austin. The boutique also sells Menaji Skincare, including cosmetics such as powders and concealers.
(507 West Mary Street, 11:30-7pm Tuesday-Saturday)
